Book Description
The federal budget deficit has fallen sharply duringthe past few years, and it is on a path to decline further this year and next year. The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimates that under current law, the deficit will total $514 billion in fiscal year 2014, compared with $1.4 trillion in 2009. At that level, this year's deficit would equal 3.0 percent of the nation's economic output, or gross domestic product (GDP)-close to the average percentage of GDP seen during the past 40 years. As it does regularly, CBO has prepared baseline projections of what federal spending, revenues, and deficits would look like over the next 10 years if current laws governing federal taxes and spending generally remained unchanged. Under that assumption, the deficit is projected to decrease again in 2015-to $478 billion, or2.6 percent of GDP (see Summary Table 1). After that, however, deficits are projected to start rising-both in dollar terms and relative to the size of the economy- because revenues are expected to grow at roughly the same pace as GDP whereas spending is expected to grow more rapidly than GDP. In CBO's baseline, spending is boosted by the aging of the population, the expansion offederal subsidies for health insurance, rising health care costs per beneficiary, and mounting interest costs on federal debt. By contrast, all federal spending apart from outlays for Social Security, major health care programs, and net interest payments is projected to drop to its lowestpercentage of GDP since 1940 (the earliest year forwhich comparable data have been reported).

Fiscal Year 2015 Budget of the U.S. Government

Fiscal Year 2015 Budget of the U.S. Government PDF Author: Executive Office of the President

Pages : 214

Book Description
Thanks to the hard work and resilience of the American people, the economy and our Nation are moving forward. More than eight million pri-vate sector jobs have been created over the last four years, the unemployment rate is at its lowest level in over five years, and health care costs are growing at the lowest rate on record. For the first time since the 1990s, the manufacturing sector is creating jobs and we produce more of our own oil at home than we buy from the rest of the world. And for the first time since the turn of the centu-ry, CEOs around the world have declared that the United States is the number one place to invest. Our economy is moving forward and business-es are creating jobs, but our top priority must be accelerating that growth while expanding opportunity for all Americans. For the last sev-eral years, manufactured crises in Washington have hindered, rather than helped, economic growth and opportunity. But earlier this year, Democrats and Republicans came together to produce a 2014 budget that invests in key areas of innovation, education, and infrastructure-investments that will help grow our economy, create jobs, and strengthen the middle class. The President's 2015 Budget shows how we can build on that progress. By rewarding hard work with fair wages, equipping all children with a high-quality education to prepare them for a good job in the future, making sure a secure retirement is within reach, and ensuring health care is affordable and reliable, we can expand op-portunity for all Americans. By fixing our broken immigration system, investing in our infrastruc-ture, simplifying the tax code for businesses, and reforming our skills and job training programs, we can create jobs and achieve stronger and more inclusive economic growth. By cutting waste-ful tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans and making common sense reforms to Government programs, we can manage our Government more efficiently and effectively, and continue to cut the deficit in a balanced way.
