Book Description
First in a series of annual reports, this volume is about people and about how development enlarges their choices--access to income, long life, knowledge, political freedom, personal security, community participation, and guaranteed human rights. It measures human development not by the yardstick of income alone, but by the human development index--reflecting life expectancy, literacy and command over resources to enjoy a decent standard of living. The report analyzes the record of human development for the last three decades and the experience of 14 countries in managing economic growth and human development. The volume concludes with human development indicators for more than 130 countries, both developing and developed. ISBN 0-19-306481-X (pbk.): $15.95.

The 1990 Science Report Card : NAEP's Assessment of Fourth, Eighth, and Twelfth Graders

The 1990 Science Report Card : NAEP's Assessment of Fourth, Eighth, and Twelfth Graders PDF Author: Lee R. Jones
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Educational surveys
Languages : en
Pages : 188

Book Description
This report from The Nation's Report Card provides further information about students' lack of preparation in science, their apparent disinclination to enroll in challenging science courses, and the comparatively low achievement of Back and Hispanic students, females, economically disadvantaged students, and non-college bound students. These Science Report Card results are based on a national survey of nearly 20,000 students in grades 4, 8, and 12, conducted during the winter and spring of 1990 by the National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP). The results from the 1990 science assessment were analyzed using item response theory (IRT) methods, allowing NAEP to describe performance across the grades and subpopulations on a 0 to 500 scale. Along this continuum, four levels of proficiency were defined: Level 200: Understands Simple Scientific Principles; Level 250: Applies General Scientific Information; Level 300: Analyzes Scientific Procedures and Data; and Level 350: Integrates Specialized Scientific Information. Overall science proficiency by race/ethnicity, gender, region, type of community, type of school, parents' highest level of education, additional home factors, types of high school programs, and plans after high school was determined. Chapters include: (1) "Overall Science Proficiency for the Nation and Demographic Subpopulations"; (2) "Levels of Science Proficiency for the National and Demographic Subpopulations"; (3) "Science Proficiency by Content Areas for the Nation, Subpopulations, and in Relation to High School Course-Taking"; (4) "Attitudes toward Science Education and Students' Experiences in Science"; (5) "Toward Scientific Literacy for All: Instructional Goals and Practices"; and (6) "Who Is Teaching Science? A Profile of the Eighth-Grade Science Teaching Force." The profile survey on teachers included data on race/ethnicity, years of teaching experience, level and type of teaching certification, academic training, teachers' perceptions of their preparation to teach science topics, and teachers' professional activities in science. An overview of the procedures used in the 1990 science assessment, the NAEP scale anchoring process for the 1990 science assessment and additional example anchor items, and statistical data for all parts of the survey are appended. Review of the Draft Fourth National Climate Assessment

Review of the Draft Fourth National Climate Assessment PDF Author: National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309471699
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 207

Book Description
Climate change poses many challenges that affect society and the natural world. With these challenges, however, come opportunities to respond. By taking steps to adapt to and mitigate climate change, the risks to society and the impacts of continued climate change can be lessened. The National Climate Assessment, coordinated by the U.S. Global Change Research Program, is a mandated report intended to inform response decisions. Required to be developed every four years, these reports provide the most comprehensive and up-to-date evaluation of climate change impacts available for the United States, making them a unique and important climate change document. The draft Fourth National Climate Assessment (NCA4) report reviewed here addresses a wide range of topics of high importance to the United States and society more broadly, extending from human health and community well-being, to the built environment, to businesses and economies, to ecosystems and natural resources. This report evaluates the draft NCA4 to determine if it meets the requirements of the federal mandate, whether it provides accurate information grounded in the scientific literature, and whether it effectively communicates climate science, impacts, and responses for general audiences including the public, decision makers, and other stakeholders.

Audubon Wildlife Report 1989/1990

Audubon Wildlife Report 1989/1990 PDF Author: William J. Chandler
Publisher: Academic Press
ISBN: 1483215830
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 606

Book Description
Audubon Wildlife Report 1989/1990 covers important challenges to the continued health of different species and ecosystems, furthering the debate on issues such as old-growth forests, the relationship between water and wildlife, and the need to preserve and restore wetlands and grassland range territory. The book starts by providing a comprehensive overview of the featured federal agency, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, including its history, legislative mandate, and key programs that affect the environment. The text then discusses federal court decisions that provide new interpretations of federal wildlife law; the conservation of coastal wetlands in the Southeast; and global climate change and its potential effects on fish and wildlife. A monitoring and research strategy for nongame migratory birds, as well as the conservation of ancient forests of the Pacific Northwest are also considered. The book further tackles the restoration of the public rangelands in the West; discard bycatch in marine fisheries with a special focus on the Gulf of Mexico; and the trends in western water law and their implications for the environment. The text also encompasses the appropriations and related congressional policy directives for federal fish and wildlife programs. Biologists and people with an advocacy of preserving wildlife will find the book invaluable.
