Thailand

Thailand PDF Author: Alexandra R. Kapur-Fic
Publisher: Abhinav Publications
ISBN: 9788170173601
Category : Buddhism
Languages : en
Pages : 630

Book Description
The Book Develops Two Major Themes. The First Theme Attempts To Understand The Sources Of Value Orientation Of The Thai People, And Their Individual And Group Behaviour. To This End The Study Examines Three Major Value Systems And Their Institutions, As Well As Their Mutual Relationship And Interaction. As The First Value System, The Study Examines The Theravada Buddhism As Founded By The Buddha, Then Focuses On Its Application In Thailand, On Buddhist Ethics And Morality, On The Conflicts Between Some Aspects Of Buddhism And The Rapidly Changing Society And, Finally, On Various Movements Attempting To Reform Buddhism In That Country. As The Second Major Value System, The Study Examines The Role Which Animism And The Spirit Worship Play In The Daily Life Of The Thai People, Their Symbolism, And Their Fusion With Buddhism And Its Values And Institutions At The Grassroot Level Of The Society. As The Third Value System, The Study Discusses Various Theories Which Attempt To Explain The Psycho-Cultural Values And Attitudes Of The Thai People, How These Interact With Buddhism And Animism, And How They Add Another Dimension To The Already Complex Pattern Of Social Behaviour. These Three Value Systems Interact And Define The Parameters Within Which All Aspects Of The National Life Political, Cultural, Economic And Others Are Actualized. The Second Major Theme Of The Book Concentrates On The Position Of Women In Thailand. It Begins With The Explanation Of The Attitudes Which The Buddha Himself Held Towards The Women, Examines The Status Of Women In Early Buddhist Societies And Of Those Women Who Chose To Renounce The World And Join The Buddhist Order To Seek Personal Salvation, As Well As The Role Of The Lay Women In A Buddhist Society At That Time. The Book Then Focuses On The Position Of Women In The Thai Society Through Various Stages Of Its History, And Culminates In The Discussion Of The Legal Position Of Women Today And The Attempts To Improve Their Status. However, In Treating The Latter Subject The Study Is Descriptive Rather Than Prescriptive, Leaving It To The Thai Women Themselves To Decide Which Remedies To Pursue To Improve Their Position.

Leadership in a Slum

Leadership in a Slum PDF Author: Alan R. Johnson
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN: 1608994074
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 259

Book Description
In Leadership in a Slum Johnson looks at leadership in the Thai social context from a different angle than traditional studies that measure well-educated Thais on leadership scales derived in the West. Seeking a cultural account of social influence processes he turns to those who have been left behind in the race to participate in a globalizing world, the urban poor. Using both systematic data collection and participant observation he develops a culturally preferred model as well as a set of models based in Thai concepts that reflect on-the-ground realities. Johnson also examines the community-state relationship and finds that in the face of state power that brings both development and the forces of eviction, the community and its leaders are not passive in this relationship but modify, reject, or resist state views in their various forms. He concludes by looking at the implications of his anthropological approach for those who are involved in leadership training in Thai settings and beyond. This work challenges the dominance of the patron-client rubric for understanding all forms of Thai leadership and offers an alternative view for understanding leadership rooted in local social systems to approaches that assume the universal applicability of leadership research findings across all cultural settings.

About Face

About Face PDF Author: Christopher L. Flanders
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN: 149827532X
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 197

Book Description
"For Thais, face is a fact," writes Flanders. However, "whether in theology, evangelism, or issues involving sin, salvation, or atonement, Thai Christians and missionaries alike seem either uninterested in or possibly incapable of addressing issues related to face. This glaring incongruity between the value of face for Thais and the lack of intentional engagement within the Thai Christian community is deeply troubling. "Surely, such a lack of careful attention to face is a dangerous posture. Uncritical views of face, furtively attaching to the theology of the Thai church, are potentially detrimental for its life and mission. Such seems to be an unavoidable situation without proper attention to face. Additionally, to ignore face is to run the risk of missing valuable cultural resources, implicit in the Thai experience of face, for the critical task of authentic Thai theological reflection. "This lack of engagement with face raises critical issues with which we must wrestle. How is it that such a central sociocultural issue has not been a more significant part of the Thai Christian vocabulary or experience? How pervasive are these negative attitudes regarding face? What lies behind them? Might this lack of self-conscious engagement with face have any relationship to the persistent Thai perception of Christianity as a foreign, Western religion? How should Christians understand this notion of face and how it relates to the ways we understand and proclaim the gospel?"
