Sustaining Export-Oriented Development

Sustaining Export-Oriented Development PDF Author: Ross Garnaut
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 9780521483049
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 412

Book Description
This book, first published in 1995, looks at the East Asian economies' post-war development and assesses the possibilities of transferring East Asian development elsewhere. Written and edited by economists, Sustaining Export-Oriented Development traces the changes in the thinking of policy makers and advisers about the policies required for economic development - especially the changed emphasis from import-substitution to outward-orientation which coincided with the East Asian economies' success. Several contributors focus on identifying the key factors in the growth of these dynamic economies. Others look at future constraints such as the environmental limits to growth and the sustainability of export growth in China. This book makes a significant contribution to the discussion of economic growth and development issues and will be of interest to those in economics, trade and aid, and others concerned with public policy.

Testing Piketty’s Hypothesis on the Drivers of Income Inequality

Testing Piketty’s Hypothesis on the Drivers of Income Inequality PDF Author: Carlos Góes
Publisher: International Monetary Fund
ISBN: 1475527691
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 27

Book Description
Thomas Piketty's Capital in the Twenty-First Century puts forth a logically consistent explanation for changes in income and wealth inequality patterns. However, while rich in data, the book provides no formal empirical testing for its theoretical causal chain. In this paper, I build a set of Panel SVAR models to check if inequality and capital share in the national income move up as the r-g gap grows. Using a sample of 19 advanced economies spanning over 30 years, I find no empirical evidence that dynamics move in the way Piketty suggests. Results are robust to several alternative estimates of r-g.

Divisia Monetary Aggregates and Economic Activities in Asian Developing Economies

Divisia Monetary Aggregates and Economic Activities in Asian Developing Economies PDF Author: Muzafar Shah Habibullah
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 042982436X
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 211

Book Description
First published in 1999, this volume examines the role and effects of financial liberalisation in ten deregulated Asian developing countries including Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Taiwan and Thailand. These areas experienced significant financial and economic changes between the ‘financially repressed economies’ of the 1970s through to the 1990s. Muzafar Shah Habibullah approaches this issue in two parts. Part 1 provides empirical evidence of relationships between monetary aggregates, nominal income and price level. In part 2, he offers an early attempt to evaluate the Divisia monetary aggregate as an alternative to the Simple-sum aggregate as an indicator for the financial and economic situation of Asian developing countries.

Developments in Japanese Economics provides information pertinent to the fundamental aspects of the developments in Japanese economics. This book presents the process innovative aspect of Japanese science and technology. Organized into three parts encompassing 12 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the heterogeneous capital goods model that is stable even with an infinitely short forecast. This text then emphasizes that the changes in capital accumulation are relevant for economic growth and decline. Other chapters consider the examples of how Japanese economists apply theory to empirical endeavors. This book discusses as well the durable capital stock of the Japanese manufacturing industries. The final chapter attempts to investigate the validity of the theory of self-dual demand functions, which can be integrated into consumer's utility function, by using both Japanese and U.S. data. This book is a valuable resource for economists, sociologists, political scientists, financial historians, statisticians, and research workers.
