Test of QED Using a Laser at the SLAC Final Focus Test Beam

Test of QED Using a Laser at the SLAC Final Focus Test Beam PDF Author:

Pages : 4

Book Description
Experiment {number_sign}144 at SLAC has three parts: the search for low-mass states excited in [gamma][gamma] collisions and observed in pair decay, the study of nonlinear, nonperturbative QED in [gamma]e and [gamma][gamma] collisions, and its possible applications to general purpose linear colliders. Such colliders could produce the full range of J{sub q··{bar q}}/{sup PC} states, leptoquarks J{sub l{center_dot}{center_dot}{bar q}}/{sup PC}, the particles of supersymmetry, the top quark or Higgs. However, to realize them a number of technical problems need resolution that are addressed in E144 together with interesting possibilities for highly polarized, high brightness [gamma]/{sup {yields}} e{sup {yields}±} beams that are needed for electroweak studies.

Quantum Suppression of Beamstrahlung for Future E+e- Linear Collider

Book Description
Beamstrahlung at interaction point may present severe limitations on linear collider performance. The approach to reduce this effect adopted for all current designs at 0.5 TeV range in center-of-mass energy will become more difficult and less effective at higher energy. We discuss the feasibility of an alternative approach, based on an effect known as quantum suppression of beamstrahlung, for future linear colliders at multi-TeV energy.

Book Description
We report on measurements of quantum electrodynamic processes in an intense electromagnetic wave, where nonlinear effects (both multiphoton and vacuum polarization) are prominent. Nonlinear Compton scattering and electron-positron pair production have been observed in collisions of 46.6 GeV and 49.1 GeV electrons of the Final Focus Test Beam at SLAC with terawatt pulses of 1053 nm and 527 nm wavelengths from a Nd:glass laser. Peak laser intensities of approximately 0.5 x 10[sup 18] W/cm[sup 2] have been achieved, corresponding to a value of approximately 0.4 for the parameter[eta]= eE[sub rms]/m[omega][sub 0]c, and to a value of approximately 0.25 for the parameter[Upsilon][sub e]= E[sub rms]/E[sub crit]= eE[sub rms][h-bar]/m[sup 2]c[sup 3], where E[sub rms] is the rms electric field strength of the laser in the electron rest frame. We present data on the scattered electron spectra arising from nonlinear Compton scattering with up to four photons absorbed from the field. A convolved spectrum of the forward high energy photons is also given. The observed positron production rate depends on the fifth power of the laser intensity, as expected for a process where five photons are absorbed from the field. The positrons are interpreted as arising from the collision of a high-energy Compton scattered photon with the laser beam. The results are found to be in agreement with theoretical predictions.

Opportunities in Intense Ultrafast Lasers

Opportunities in Intense Ultrafast Lasers PDF Author: National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309467721
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 347

Book Description
The laser has revolutionized many areas of science and society, providing bright and versatile light sources that transform the ways we investigate science and enables trillions of dollars of commerce. Now a second laser revolution is underway with pulsed petawatt-class lasers (1 petawatt: 1 million billion watts) that deliver nearly 100 times the total world's power concentrated into a pulse that lasts less than one-trillionth of a second. Such light sources create unique, extreme laboratory conditions that can accelerate and collide intense beams of elementary particles, drive nuclear reactions, heat matter to conditions found in stars, or even create matter out of the empty vacuum. These powerful lasers came largely from U.S. engineering, and the science and technology opportunities they enable were discussed in several previous National Academies' reports. Based on these advances, the principal research funding agencies in Europe and Asia began in the last decade to invest heavily in new facilities that will employ these high-intensity lasers for fundamental and applied science. No similar programs exist in the United States. Opportunities in Intense Ultrafast Lasers assesses the opportunities and recommends a path forward for possible U.S. investments in this area of science.
