Book Description
Ten Singing Lessons by Mathilde Marchesi is a gold mine of a book for any person trying to improve their singing voice or encourage others to do so, particularly those of the soprano range, as the author was. Even for the likes of the multitude of what we shall call 'vocally un-gifted' people, within which group this individual counts themself, Ms Marchesi's Ten Singing Lessons makes for a fascinating read. Born in Germany in the early 19th century Mathilde Marchesi's early life was spent in the pursuit of a singing career. Her voice proving only "adequate" this career, although achieved, was short lived and Mathilde moved on to become a tutor at the age of 28. In this endeavour she met far more success, so much so that in 1881, at the age of 60, she was able to open her own school on the vocal arts. Achieving fame largely for the training of such successful singers as Nellie Melba and Selma Kurz, Mathilde Marchesi was a much renowned and sought after singing tutor until she passed on in 1913. The contents of this book being fairly obvious, all we need say is that Mathidle Marchesi's advice is as valuable today as it was on its original publication.
