"The Mediterranean region and Asia provide a natural laboratory to investigate the driving forces of continental tectonics in an ongoing collisional orogen and the crustal and mantle response to various modes of deformation associated with plate boundary processes. The multidisciplinary research efforts in this region over the last fifteen years have produced a wealth of new data to better understand the interplay and feedback mechanisms between crustal and mantle processes and the dynamic landscape evolution in a complexly deforming area. The Mediterranean and northern Arabian regions provide a unique natural laboratory to constrain geodynamics associated with arc-continent and continent-continent collision and subsequent orogenic collapse by analysing regional and temporal distributions of the various elements in the geological archive. This book combines thirteen new contributions that highlight timing and distribution of the Cretaceous to Recent evolution of the Calabrian, Carpathian, Aegean and Anatolian segments of the Africa-Arabia-Eurasia subduction zone. These are subdivided into five papers documenting the timing and kinematics of Cretaceous arc-continent collision, and Eocene and Miocene continent-continent collision in Anatolia, with westward extrusion of Anatolia as a result. Palaeomagnetism is a technique used to understand complex deformation patterns in fold-and-thrust belts; it can be used to characterize the distribution, magnitude and timing of vertical axis rotations, an elusive variable using other methods. A combination of palaeomagnetic and structural geology analyses has helped to unravel the geometry and kinematics of fold-and-thrust belts around the world and of different geological ages for more than 50 years. This volume comprises three sections: the first shows thorough overviews of western Mediterranean arcs and the western Carpathians; the second depicts several examples from the Andes, the Alps, Anatolia, Pyrenees, Iberian Ranges and the Atlas; and the third shows the latest research on the use of palaeomagnetism to understand fold-and-thrust belts in 3D and 4D in a more quantitative way and it also includes some methodological proposals to avoid common errors. The fifteen chapters included in this volume are concerned with the main issues in the Eastern Black sea and Caucasus regions of the Alpine–Tethyan orogenic realm, which are: (1) the changes in space and time of geodynamic processes responsible for the closure of the northern branch of the Neotethys Ocean and how these changes are related to the opening and inversion of back-arc basins; (2) the northwestern terminus of the Eastern Black sea rift; (3) timing and evolution of inverted and foreland basins; (4) the continuity of structures and their evolution in time between the Eastern Black Sea, the Greater Caucasus, the Lesser Caucasus and those of the Taurides–Anatolides– Pontides belt and of NW Iran; and (5) Paratethys evolution since the Eocene in this belt. The papers included in this volume present new results obtained mostly by projects supported by the DARIUS programme.
