Technology Transfer And Development

Technology Transfer And Development PDF Author: R. C. Mascarenhas
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1000314200
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 217

Book Description
In most Third World nations, importing technology from other countries is considered vital to industrialization and economic development. This book examines the processes of technology transfer and development by tracing how Hindustan Machine Tools—a public enterprise in India—successfully collaborated with manufacturers from industrialized nations in its growth from a single factory to a diversified industrial complex. The author critically analyzes the company's overall strategies for diversification and expansion and its approaches to selecting, acquiring, absorbing, and generating technology and to developing appropriate management. He also points to important relationships between “policy efficiency” and “administrative efficiency” and discusses socioeconomic and cultural factors that can obstruct the successful development and operation of an industrial enterprise in a developing country.

Book Description
This study examines issues concerning technologytransfer and acquisition in India's automotive industry. First, issues from theexisting research literature are reviewed and synthesized under six topics: (1)hurdles and barriers during the technology acquisition process, such as lack ofin-house technology and high cost of technology; (2) vendor-customerrelationships and effective technology transfer, including sharing design workand supplier involvement in product development; (3) suitability of acquiredtechnology, such as respecting cost effectiveness and mode of transfer; (4)adaptations of the acquired technology, including capabilities and planning ofthe receiving company; (5) characteristics of the donor company; and (6)training of the employees for effective technology transfer. Second, the issues relating to technology transfer are brought out inrelation to a field study, which was conducted with 22 managers in eightdifferent organizations in the Indian automotive sector. It was found thatreceiving companies have limited capabilities for developing and adapting theproduct technology. Unfavorable government policies were also a hurdle inacquiring technology. A high level of automation was often found to beunsuitable for low volumes of production. Organizations were found toseektechnologies in orderto enhance technological capabilities, respond toincreased competitive pressure, and to satisfy customer companies.Otherhurdles identified include language/communication barriers, lack ofinfrastructure and machinery, and scarcity of a skilled work force.(TNM).

Handbook of Research on Cluster Theory

Handbook of Research on Cluster Theory PDF Author: Charlie Karlsson
Publisher: Edward Elgar Publishing
ISBN: 184844284X
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 333

Book Description
Karlsson has assembled a strong mix of papers that collectively provide a good sense of some of the latest research in the field. Edward Feser, Review of Regional Studies This is a book every regional scientist and spatial analyst should have on their bookshelf. Like most Handbook type publications it provides depth and breadth on the basics of the industrial clustering concept. However, unlike most of these type of collections, it goes beyond the foundation material to identify and speculate on questions that are emerging on the research frontiers such as at the intersection of cluster theory and agglomeration processes, knowledge spillovers and technology transfer not to mention the obvious link to economic development theory, policy and practice. Roger R. Stough, George Mason University, US This eclectic volume presents a host of methods to describe tendencies for the joint location of economic agents in space. And it illustrates useful applications of these concepts in diverse fields financial services, culture, tourism, and industry, to name just a few. John M. Quigley, University of California, US Clusters have increasingly dominated local and regional development policies in recent decades and the growing intellectual and political interest for clusters and clustering is the prime motivation for this Handbook. Charlie Karlsson unites leading experts to present a thorough overview of economic cluster research. Topics explored include agglomeration and cluster theory, methods for analysing clusters, clustering in different spatial contexts and clustering in service industries. Encompassing the developed economies of Europe and North America, the Handbook provides a basis for improving cluster policy formulation, interpretation and analyses. This comprehensive overview of research on economic clusters will be of interest to scholars and PhD students in (regional) economics, economic geography, regional planning and management as well as practitioners and policymakers at the national, regional and local levels involved in cluster formation and cluster management.
