Book Description
The techniques available for the study of sediments and sedimentary rocks form the focus of this book. While field aspects are included, greater emphasis is placed on the laboratory examination of sediments. Each chapter provides introductory background material and then proceeds to a discussion of technique, the equipment, and its limitations. Quantitative Techniques for the Analysis of Sediments

Quantitative Techniques for the Analysis of Sediments PDF Author: Daniel F Merriam
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 1483159957
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 187

Book Description
Quantitative Techniques for the Analysis of Sediments: An International Symposium is a compilation of studies about the integration and application of statistics, mathematics, and computers in the field of sedimentology. The book includes 13 studies from different experts in the field of sedimentology. These studies discuss topics such as the analysis and management of systems suitable for sedimentological data; the different methods of analysis and the numerical classification of different sedimentological data; and the assessment of quantitative methods in comparing lithological succession data. Also included is the trend analysis of sedimentary thickness data; numerical classification of multi-variate petrographic presence-absence data by association analysis; and the mathematical modeling and statistical recognition of terrestrial and marine sediments. The text will interest those in the field of sedimentology and geology, especially those who are engaged in research and wish to be aided by the different techniques included.

A Practical Approach to Sedimentology

A Practical Approach to Sedimentology PDF Author: Roy Lindholm
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401176833
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 292

Book Description
This book is designed for a one-semester course in sedimentology taken by advanced undergraduate or graduate students. It gives detailed descriptions of sedimentary features and the analytical methods used to evaluate them and is intended to support and reinforce principles presented in lectures. Discussion of principles and processes is found in complimentary texts, such as Leeder's (1982) Sedimentology: process and product and selected readings in professional journals. This book is not an exhaustive treatise of laboratory techniques and theory. The subject matter includes topics generally covered in courses entitled "Sedimentology" or "Sedimentation". Sandstone and carbonate petrography is commonly given in a separate course. Furthermore, this topic is covered in several current texts. For these reasons I have omitted petrographic methods, with the exception of those applying to heavy minerals. I have included a rather extensive discussion of heavies because this topic is generally lacking in most modern texts. Every course in sedimentology is highly individualistic and material covered varies with the interests, background, and point of view of the instructor. For these reasons some topics presented in this book are not necessarily covered in all courses. Similarly some instructors may find that their favorite topic is missing. I can only hope that this problem is minimal. Several chapters contain precise exercises to be completed by the student. Some must be done in the classroom, where specimens are available for study. Others may be done outside of the classroom.

A Practical Guide to the Study of Glacial Sediments

A Practical Guide to the Study of Glacial Sediments PDF Author: David J. A. Evans
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1134653948
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 275

Book Description
Sediments are the most valuable form of physical evidence for past Earth surface processes. They have the potential to build up an archive of events and provide a window into the past. Through careful examination of sediments the shifting patterns of surface processes across space and time are revealed, allowing us to reconstruct past environments and environmental change. A Practical Guide to the Study of Glacial Sediments is a guide to the standard techniques employed to read the sedimentary record of former glaciers and ice sheets. It demonstrates that the often complex and fragmentary glacial sedimentary record can, when examined systematically and rationally, provide detailed insights into former environments and climates in places where no other evidence is available. The complementary techniques covered in this book include: facies description, grain size analysis, clast form assessment, clast macrofabric analysis, micromorphology, particle lithology and assessment of engineering properties. They yield consistent and meaningful results in a range of glacial depositional environments throughout the world, from the high Arctic to the Himalayas. A Practical Guide to the Study of Glacial Sediments provides students and researchers with a clear and accessible guide to recording and interpreting glacial successions wherever the location.

Languages : en
Pages : 328

Book Description
Sediments and sedimentary rocks cover 70% of the Earth's surface, and make up a significant portion of the geological record. Understanding the processes (physical, chemical and biological) that lead to formation of sedimentary material is key in disciplines ranging from geology to environmental science to archaeology. But before interpretation must come observation and identification: Stow's Field Guide is a must-have for this distinctly visual process Professor Stow has culled his extensive research experience into a succinct guide designed for students and professionals in geophysics, geochemistry, paleontology, soil sciences, environmental sciences and more. Sections on field techniques and reader-friendly descriptions also make this guide accessible to amateur geologists. * More than 400 color photographs and diagrams * Extensive cross-referencing for ease of use in the field * Examples from more than 30 countries * Focus on economic applications
