Les mesures de vitesse (ainsi que de températures et de concentrations de différentes espèces) par des techniques spectroscopiques reposant sur la diffusion des molécules sont bien adaptées à la caractérisation des écoulements rapides et réactifs , elles reposent sur la fluorescence induite par laser, la diffusion Raman Anti-Stokes cohérente ou l'emploi de diodes laser accordables. Dans les écoulements diphasiques, la détermination de la granulométrie des particules par des moyens optiques, ainsi que les principes de diffusion de la lumière sont détaillés.
