The Courteous Power

The Courteous Power PDF Author: John D. Ciorciari
Publisher: University of Michigan Press
ISBN: 0472129295
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 333

Book Description
The Courteous Power seeks to provide a nuanced view of the current relationship between Japan and Southeast Asia. Much of the current scholarship on East–Southeast Asian engagement has focused on the multidimensional chess game playing out between China and Japan, as the dominant post-imperialist powers. Alternatively, there has been renewed attention on ASEAN and other Southeast Asian–centered initiatives, explicitly minimizing the influence of East Asia in the region. Given the urgency of understanding the careful balance in the Indo-Pacific region, this volume brings together scholars to examine the history and current engagement from a variety of perspectives, ranging from economic and political, to the cultural and technological, while also focusing more clearly on the specific relationship between the region and Japan.

Building Social Capital in Thailand

Building Social Capital in Thailand PDF Author: Danny Unger
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 9780521639316
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 248

Book Description
Between 1984 and 1994 Thailand had the most rapid economic expansion in the world. This 1998 book offers an explanation of this successful record of economic growth in Thailand, and in Southeast Asia more generally. The book explains why Thai leaders adopted a market-driven strategy from the late 1950s, and also shows how the overseas Chinese in Thailand built on their community's social capital to overcome the market failures common to all developing countries. Unger takes an interdisciplinary approach, building on the literatures of social capital and embedded autonomy. He considers the unique organization of Thai society, and the impact this has had on the country's institutions, and their political and economic outcomes. The book includes detailed analysis of the financial and textile sectors, as well as the development of heavy industries and transportation infrastructure.

Advancing East Asian Regionalism

Advancing East Asian Regionalism PDF Author: Melissa Curley
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1134273800
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 387

Book Description
Developments in East Asia have progressed rapidly in terms of regionalism since the 1997 crisis. The end of the Asian miracle called into question not only the capacity of regional states to meet the needs of their attendant peoples, but also challenged the viability of regional organizations, such as ASEAN, to adapt and respond to the changing circumstances. Advancing East Asian Regionalism looks at the ways in which ASEAN has expanded since the crisis, and evaluates the potential of East Asia to come together in a regional formation - one capable of representing the region as a whole - akin to the European Community. It draws upon the knowledge and perspectives of academics and policy makers actively engaged in the contradictory issues of regionalism. Coupling case study material on regionalism, institutions, and sectoral cooperation, with theoretical debates on regionalization, this book is an invaluable resource that pushes our understanding of East Asian regionalism forward.

Asia Pacific Graduate Education

Asia Pacific Graduate Education PDF Author: Deane E. Neubauer
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 1137547839
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 239

Book Description
This volume examines the changes taking place within graduate education in the Asia Pacific Region. A collection of essays by distinguished scholars from eight Asia Pacific nations links profound changes occurring in the economies and societies of the region to the many changes taking place within higher education. Focusing on how the dynamics of a changing global economy are affecting the ways higher education institutions are responding, particular changes are seen to be taking place in graduate education as many societies experience the need to produce graduates of high quality with elevated qualifications. Such changes are not without challenge or difficulty as issues of finance. Questions of appropriate directions of innovation and overall higher education capacity continue to frame the broader issue of the changing nature of graduate education.

APEC

APEC PDF Author: Chia Siow Yue
Publisher: Institute of Southeast Asian Studies
ISBN: 9813016922
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 212

Book Description
Political and academic interest in economic relations among APEC economies and in the APEC process has been gaining momentum. The November 1993 Seattle meetings of APEC ministers and leaders marked a turning point for the APEC forum.APEC: Challenges and Opportunities is the result of the First APEC Roundtable held in June 1994 to analyze the issues involved and explore the future direction of APEC. Two papers provide the background for the analysis of APEC economic relations and the co-operation agenda, one examining security issues in the region and the other, the economic dynamism of East Asia. The next set of papers trace the evolution of the concept of Asia-Pacific economic co-operation, examine the APEC process and structure as well as differences in American and Asia approaches, and explore the likely institutional structure and appropriate agenda for APEC. Also looked into are the trends and patterns of trade and investment interdependence among the APEC countries, the various options for regional trade and investment facilitation, and the cse for an APEC free trade area and an APEC investment code. The two final papers examine subsets of the APEC relationships, namely, the complementary and competitive elements between ASEAN and APEC and between ASEAN and NAFTA.
