Les autorités soviétiques avaient délibérément choisi la stratégie du silence, de l’attentisme - « wait and see » - et du mensonge. Les controverses autour de l’impact de la catastrophe de Tchernobyl sont liées au climat de déni scientifique imposé par l'industrie de l'atome et fondées sur l’idée que cette catastrophe fut un « non-événement », un épiphénomène. Le silence fut brisé quelques années plus tard par les propres autorités acculées devant l’immensité d’un désastre, dont les conséquences sont encore visibles dans l'existence de désespoir de milliers de personnes qui vivent dans les territoires contaminés de Bélarus et d’Ukraine. Les confessions que nous avons recueillies des hauts responsables viennent à reconnaitre qu’il a fallu longtemps pour admettre que la contamination n’est pas figée, elle se déplace. On a fait croire que les villes éloignées de la centrale de Tchernobyl seraient dans une relative sécurité, mais le danger ne diminue pas forcément lorsqu’on s’éloigne du lieu de l’accident nucléaire. Les enfants sont les premières victimes de la radiation et 80% de la contamination provient de la nourriture qu’ils absorbent. Ce livre est le résultat de vingt ans de travail auprès des habitants des territoires les plus contaminés du Bélarus. Il s’agit d’un travail d’immersion sur le terrain où l’on observe la déchirure des familles qui vivent encore sous la menace permanente de la contamination radioactive. D’une manière ou d’une autre, pour la population il faut continuer à vivre avec. Beaucoup ont franchi la ligne invisible qu’ils n’auraient pas dû franchir, à savoir, le sentiment qui mêle intimement l’idée qu’il n’y a plus rien à faire. « Nous sommes condamnés ».
