John Riddy

John Riddy PDF Author: John Riddy
Publisher: Steidl
ISBN: 9783958295667
Category : Photography
Languages : en
Pages : 256

Book Description
John Riddy's photographs are distinguished by a combination of poetic delicacy and formal precision which has been evident since his earliest pictures made in London in the late 1980s. Working consistently in series, Riddy has created collective studies of urban architecture and rural landscapes in countries as disparate as Japan, Italy, South Africa and the United States, in every case exploiting the capacity for still images to render the everyday both factual and transcendent. The starting point for much of his work has been the relationship between photography and the history of art and architecture, such as John Ruskin's autobiography, Hokusai's woodblock prints and Gustave Le Gray's photographs. This book presents all of Riddy's major series and, like a volume of collected poems, each image is distinct and of itself yet linked to its counterparts by technical skill and a finely tuned sensibility. The sequence of images builds progressively towards a final series of magisterial works that reveals Riddy's subtle use of color, light and darkness to express his complex comprehension of the world. I know of no recent body of photographic work that exhibits a more deeply considered set of reflections on the nature of the enterprise. Michael Fried Exhibition: De Pont Museum, Tilburg, April 2019

The Radical Eye

The Radical Eye PDF Author: Elton John
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781849764063
Category : Modernism (Art)
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
Elton John's truly remarkable collection of international modernist photography stems from personal passion: since 1991, he has amassed more than two thousand photographs, which include key figures from Europe and America alongside many of the foremost photographers from Japan, Eastern Europe and Latin America. This book draws together the finest works from 1920 to 1950, a period that is widely considered to be photography's 'coming of age', a time of great experimentation and innovation when artists pushed the boundaries of the medium. New Vision refers to the term coined by Laszlo Moholy-Nagy in the mid 1920s to describe the way photography could be used to see the world through a modern lens. As new technology developed, it allowed the freedom both to experiment and to record, leading to new developments such as photograms, typographics and the bird's- and worm's eye views. This period also encompassed key avant-garde movements of the 20th century in which photography played a central role - dada, surrealism, the Bauhaus and Russian constructivism.0With over 150 illustrations, an interview with Elton John exploring the motivations behind his collecting, and essays looking at the photographs within the history of modernism and an exploration of the impact of technical innovations on the form, New Vision will introduce a new audience to this unique body of work and provide an indispensable resource to those who are already fans of the period.0Exhibition: Tate Gallery, London, UK (10.11.2015 - 07.05.2017).

Mark Leckey

Mark Leckey PDF Author: Clarrie Wallis
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781849766340
Category : Art, British
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
Turner Prize winner Mark Leckey is one of the most influential contemporary artists working today. Since he came to prominence in the late 1990s, Leckey's practice has addressed the radical effect of technology on popular culture and has powerfully articulated the transition from analogue to digital culture. His work is often concerned with under-represented or overlooked aspects of British culture and explores ideas about both collective and personal history. For example, the film Fiorucci Made Me Hardcore 1999 uses sampled footage to trace dance subcultures in British nightclubs from the 1970s to the 1990s. Dream English Kid, 1964-1999 AD 2015 focuses on key episodes in his own life, constructed from "found memories" sourced primarily from the internet. This book, accompanying Leckey's first major show at Tate, combines newly commissioned writing with artist's scripts for performances, and illustrates his previous work as well as the intriguing sources of inspiration for this powerful, immersive new exhibition.
