From Genghis Khan to Tamerlane

From Genghis Khan to Tamerlane PDF Author: Peter Jackson
Publisher: Yale University Press
ISBN: 0300275048
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 745

Book Description
An epic account of how a new world order under Tamerlane was born out of the decline of the Mongol Empire By the mid-fourteenth century, the world empire founded by Genghis Khan was in crisis. The Mongol Ilkhanate had ended in Iran and Iraq, China’s Mongol rulers were threatened by the native Ming, and the Golden Horde and the Central Asian Mongols were prey to internal discord. Into this void moved the warlord Tamerlane, the last major conqueror to emerge from Inner Asia. In this authoritative account, Peter Jackson traces Tamerlane’s rise to power against the backdrop of the decline of Mongol rule. Jackson argues that Tamerlane, a keen exponent of Mongol custom and tradition, operated in Genghis Khan’s shadow and took care to draw parallels between himself and his great precursor. But, as a Muslim, Tamerlane drew on Islamic traditions, and his waging of wars in the name of jihad, whether sincere or not, had a more powerful impact than those of any Muslim Mongol ruler before him.

Studies in Indo-Muslim History by S.H. Hodivala Volume II

Studies in Indo-Muslim History by S.H. Hodivala Volume II PDF Author: Sanjay Garg
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 0429757778
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 664

Book Description
In the field of medieval Indian historiography, an eight-volume magnum opus, History of India as Told by Its Own Historians, by Sir Henry Myers Elliot (1808-53) and the editor-compiler of his posthumous papers, John Dowson (1820-81), was published from London between 1867 and 1877. These landmark volumes continue to retain their popularity even nearly hundred and fifty years later, and scholars still learn from and conduct their research on the basis of this work. However, an enterprise of this scale and magnitude was bound to suffer from some serious shortcomings. An eminent Indian scholar, S.H. Hodivala undertook the daunting task of annotating Elliot and Dowson’s volumes and worked through all the new material, selecting or criticizing and adding his own suggestions where previous comments did not exist or appeared unsuitable. The first volume of Hodivala’s annotated Studies, was published in 1939, while the second was published posthumously in 1957. Over the years, while the work of Elliot and Dowson has seen many reprints, and is even available online now, Hodivala’s volumes have receded into obscurity. A new edition is presented here for the first time. Hodivala also published critical commentaries on 238 of about 2000 entries included in another very famous work, Hobson-Jobson (London, 1886) by Sir Henry Yule (1820-89) and Arthur Coke Burnell (1840-82). These have also been included in the present edition. These volumes are thus aimed at serving as an indispensable compendium of both, Elliot and Dowson’s, and for Yule and Burnell’s excellent contributions of colonial scholarship. At the same time these would also serve as a guide for comparative studies and critical appreciation of historical texts. Please note: Taylor & Francis does not sell or distribute the Hardback in India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka

The Image of the Prophet between Ideal and Ideology

The Image of the Prophet between Ideal and Ideology PDF Author: Christiane J. Gruber
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG
ISBN: 3110383152
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 389

Book Description

Hasan-I-Sabbah

Hasan-I-Sabbah PDF Author: Dr Ali Mohammad Rajput
Publisher: Xlibris Corporation
ISBN: 1483626717
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 265

Book Description
There are sections of Islamic History which mention Hasan-i-Sabbah briefly but no writer treats the subject in details. Hodgson and Lewis published under a misleading title of Assassinsand more recently F. Daftary wrote a general history of the Ismailis. Thus there is a need of a book covering the topic in greater depth and details. Hasan Sabbah; His life and thought, covers the history of the Middle East Crusade Period. It also deals with the founder of the Nizari Ismaili State in the North Iran and Syria and against the powerful Seljuks and the Sunni Caliphate of Islam.
