L’ouvrage s’attache à analyser sous un angle nouveau la production de tapisseries de la manufacture des Gobelins pendant le règne de Louis XIV, surtout à partir de l’arrivée de Louvois comme surintendant des Bâtiments du Roi en 1683. Il met en lumière un aspect complètement déprécié par l’historiographie, celui du tissage d’oeuvres non destinées à la tapisserie à l’origine. En effet, après la mise sur les métiers de grandes tentures aux sujets et cartons originaux, notamment aux débuts de la manufacture par le peintre Le Brun sous l’impulsion de Colbert, la transcription textile de tableaux, décors ou même tapisseries plus anciennes prit une place prépondérante sous Louvois. Cette pratique, qui a le plus souvent été considérée comme une décadence de l’art de la tapisserie, fait l’objet ici d’une réévaluation par l’étude du contexte plus général de la production artistique de l’époque. Le propos de cet essai est de revenir sur ces tapisseries transposant dans le grand format des peintures et dessins de Raphaël, Giulio Romano, Nicolas Poussin et Pierre Mignard. Ces oeuvres ont été peu étudiées, elles ont été principalement analysées sous l’angle de la représentation politique, mais rarement d’un point de vue esthétique.
