A Flowering Tree and Other Oral Tales from India

A Flowering Tree and Other Oral Tales from India PDF Author: A. K. Ramanujan
Publisher: Univ of California Press
ISBN: 9780520203990
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 292

Book Description
This book of oral tales from the south Indian region of Kannada represents the culmination of a lifetime of research by A. K. Ramanujan, one of the most revered scholars and writers of his time. The result of over three decades' labor, this long-awaited collection makes available for the first time a wealth of folktales from a region that has not yet been adequately represented in world literature. Ramanujan's skill as a translator, his graceful writing style, and his profound love and understanding of the subject enrich the tales that he collected, translated, and interpreted. With a written literature recorded from about 800 A.D., Kannada is rich in mythology, devotional and secular poetry, and more recently novels and plays. Ramanujan, born in Mysore in 1929, had an intimate knowledge of the language. In the 1950s, when working as a college lecturer, he began collecting these tales from everyone he could--servants, aunts, schoolteachers, children, carpenters, tailors. In 1970 he began translating and interpreting the tales, a project that absorbed him for the next three decades. When Ramanujan died in 1993, the translations were complete and he had written notes for about half of the tales. With its unsentimental sympathies, its laughter, and its delightfully vivid sense of detail, the collection stands as a significant and moving monument to Ramanujan's memory as a scholar and writer.

Madeline City and Other Tales

Madeline City and Other Tales PDF Author: Steven Maus
Publisher: Steven Maus
ISBN: 9781432738068
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 574

Book Description
Madeline City is situated inside a ring of steep mountains and all but covered by the constant clouds that serve as a reminder of the dreary conditions of all who live within the walls. While the people of Bater District, Gnight District, and other less privileged areas of the city suffer by fighting, stealing, and drinking their way through life, the officers of the church execute their Prelate's orders to bring the entire city under militant, fanatical rule. But just who is the goddess Madeline? Or rather, who was she? No longer among her people, she once brought peace, love, and prosperity to her city, but was moved to abandon them after they tarried in their allegiance to her long ago. Now the Magmenian Rebellion claims her as their champion as they strive to overthrow the church's stranglehold on the city, and the Augsburg Church cites divine duty as they scour the alleys and slums, seeking to imprison anyone who would refuse to submit to her holy law. And so it is the innocent and the oppressed who star in this collection about a people seeking to understand the forces at work in their world.

Book Description
Ancestors of the nomadic group called San (or Bushmen) once roamed the northern territories of Africa and the Mediterranean. Now inhabiting the Kalahari desert (the place that dried up long ago) in South Africa, these fascinating people are known for their astonishing memory, extraordinary talents for hunting and tracking, superior abilities for finding food and water, and great storytelling. Here then is a portrait of one of the world's oldest and most remarkable cultures and its environment. The group's history, nomadic way of life, beliefs, customs, and stories are offered to readers with exquisite illustrations and color photographs of people, animals, and the land. Fifteen traditional tales, such as The Rain Bull, The First Tug-of-War, In Search of the Golden Prize, and All the Stars of Heaven, are presented in poetic verse and juxtaposed with commentary on the challenges this group faces today. The author has also included a glossary and a bibliography of resources for further study.
