Slave Trades, 1500–1800

Slave Trades, 1500–1800 PDF Author: Patrick Manning
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351899775
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 394

Book Description
The trade in slaves is perhaps the most notorious feature of the era of European expansion. Though begun in ancient times, and continued well after 1800, in the early modern period there developed a particular nexus in which it boomed. This volume distinguishes between procurement and trade, and the exploitation of settled slaves (the subject of a separate volume in the series, edited by Judy Bieber), and underscores the importance of the slave trade as a factor in world history. A rank redistribution of wealth and power, it permitted the exploitation and reconstruction of much of the globe. The articles address issues of the volume and flow of trade, the various populations enslaved, factors of sex, age, and ethnicity, and its impact on economic change, as in the monetization of Africa or economic growth in England.

State and Rural Society in Medieval Islam

State and Rural Society in Medieval Islam PDF Author: Tsugitaka Sato
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004493182
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 351

Book Description
This book deals with the evolution of Islamic state and society from the 10th to the 14th centuries, focusing on the history of the Arab society under the iqṭā‘ (allocated tax revenue) system. The book offers a well documented study of the system with its use of hitherto unpublished Arabic manuscripts. The introductory chapter deals with the historical origins of the iqṭā‘ system, while chapters that follow discuss the history of the system in Iraq, Syria and Egypt, including systematic studies on the rural life and peasantry in Egypt. State and Rural Society in Medieval Islam is the first thorough, book-length study to show how this system may explain various historical phenomena in medieval Islam. The iqṭā‘ system now can be seen as a system with a comprehensive life of its own.

Early History of the Israelite People

Early History of the Israelite People PDF Author: Thomas L. Thompson
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9789004119437
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 510

Book Description
This is a groundbreaking book on the origins of Israel, taking into account the contexts of geography, anthropology, and sociology, and drawing on a careful analysis of archaeological and written evidence. Thompson argues that none of the traditional models for the origin of biblical Israel in terms of conquest, peaceful settlement, or revolution are viable. The ninth and eighth century BC State of Israel is a product of the Mediterranean economy. The development of the ethnic concept of biblical Israel finds its context in history first at the time of the Persian renaissance. The volume presents a clear historical context and an interpretative matrix for the Bible.
