Foundations of Nanotechnology, Volume Two

Foundations of Nanotechnology, Volume Two PDF Author: Sabu Thomas
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1771880287
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 422

Book Description
The collection of topics in this book reflects the diversity of recent advances in nanoelements formation and interactions in nanosystems with a broad perspective that is useful for scientists as well as for graduate students and engineers. One of the main tasks in making nanocomposites is building the dependence of the structure and shape of the nanoelements, forming the basis for the composite of their sizes. This is because with an increase or a decrease in the specific size of nanoelements, their physical–mechanical properties such as the coefficient of elasticity, strength, and deformation parameter, vary by over one order. The calculations show that this is primarily due to a significant rearrangement of the atomic structure and the shape of the nanoelement. The investigation of the above parameters of the nanoelements is technically complicated and laborious because of their small sizes. When the characteristics of powder nanocomposites are calculated, it is also very important to take into account the interaction of the nanoelements since the changes in their original shapes and sizes in the interaction process and during the formation of the nanocomposite can lead to a significant change in its properties and a cardinal structural rearrangement. In addition, the studies show the appearance of the processes of the ordering and self-assembling leading to a more organized form of a nanosystem. The above phenomena play an important role in nanotechnological processes. They allow nanotechnologies to be developed for the formation of nanostructures by the self-assembling method (which is based on self-organizing processes) and building up complex spatial nanostructures consisting of different nanoelements. The study of the above dependences based on the mathematical modeling methods requires the solution of the aforementioned problem at the atomic level. This requires large computational aids and computational time, which makes the development of economical calculation methods urgent. The objective of this volume is the development of such a technique in various nanosystems.

Energy and Sustainability V

Energy and Sustainability V PDF Author: H.H. Al-Kayiem
Publisher: WIT Press
ISBN: 1845648374
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 925

Book Description
Energy and Sustainability V is the proceedings of the 5th International Conference on Energy and Sustainability, held by the Wessex Institute of Technology. The modern world is highly dependent on the exploitation of fossil fuels. More recently, resources depletion and severe environmental effects deriving from the continuous use of these fuels has resulted in an increasing amount of interest in renewable energy resources and the search for sustainable energy policies. The changes required to progress from an economy mainly based on hydrocarbons to one taking advantage of sustainable energy resources are massive and require considerable scientific research as well as engineering systems. The effect also involves collaboration between different disciplines in order to arrive at optimum solutions, including buildings, energy networks, convenience systems, new energy storage solutions, waste to energy technologies, and many others. This book covers topics related to sustainability in energy and power production, storage, distribution and management. These include: Smart grids; Smart metering; Green ICT; Green buildings; Energy storage; Renewable energy resources; Plug-in Hybrid Vehicles (PHEV); Biofuels (solid, liquid, gas); Waste to energy; CO2 capturing and management; Energy and transportation; Environmental risk; Energy policies; Greener power plant technologies; Hydrogen recovery techniques; Sustainable energy production.

Zero Waste in the Last Best Place

Zero Waste in the Last Best Place PDF Author: Bradley Edward Layton PhD PE
Publisher: iUniverse
ISBN: 1532022670
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 171

Book Description
What will the world look like in fifty years? In one hundred years? Four hundred years? Will we still pollute our skies with carbon? Will we still build monuments by the curb to nameless waste gods only to have our diapers, wrappers, cartons, and packaging squished into a foul-smelling hell-on-wheels to be hauled to the methane-emitting monument of NIMBY our global civilization is creating? No! Lets drive cars, build gardens, and live in buildings that leave the earth cleaner than we found it! In this little book Professor Bradley Layton takes us on a journey through the bowels of MIT, the dumpsters of our cities, and shares his own personal account of moving away from the landfill in Missoula, Montana, home of A River Runs Through It, downtown river surfing, and epic fly fishing. Once youve made your way through this book, youll never look at garbage or trash the same way again. You will see and help create a future where nothing goes to waste. You will help restore the earth to The Garden that we were entrusted with in The Beginning.
