Biocomposites

Biocomposites PDF Author: Shakeel Ahmed
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 135161715X
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 496

Book Description
Biocomposites, formed by a matrix and a reinforcement of natural fibers, often mimic the structure of living materials and offer the strength of the matrix as well as biocompatibility. Being renewable, cheap, recyclable, and biodegradable, they have witnessed rapidly growing interest in terms of industrial and fundamental applications. This book focuses on fiber-based composites applied to biomedical and environmental applications. It presents a comprehensive survey of biocomposites from the existing literature, paying particular attention to various biomedical and environmental applications. The text describes mechanical designs and manufacturing aspects of various fibrous polymer matrix composites and presents examples of the synthesis and development of bionanocomposites and their applications. The book is the first of its kind to present all these topics together unlike most other books on nano-/biocomposites that are generally limited to their fundamentals, different methods of synthesis, and applications.

Advancing the Synthesis of Polyionic Biocomposite Materials by the Natural Fiber Welding Process

Advancing the Synthesis of Polyionic Biocomposite Materials by the Natural Fiber Welding Process PDF Author: Christian E. Hoffman
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Biopolymers
Languages : en
Pages : 57

Book Description
"Biomaterials such as cotton and silk are abundant natural resources with material properties equal or superior to many synthetic polymers. Using ionic liquids (ILs) and the Natural Fiber Welding (NFW) process, biomaterials can be chemically and physically enhanced. Here we present progress on using polymerizable ionic liquids (Poly-ILs) in the NFW process. Poly-ILs with different cation and anion structures were synthesized and subsequently characterized using 1-H and 13-C NMR, then evaluated for their ability to (i) polymerize and (ii) solubilize a biopolymer (cellulose) matrix. The best performing Poly-ILs were used in the NFW process to prepare polyionic biocomposite materials" -- Report Documentation Page [Standard Form 298 (Rev. 8-98)].
