Annual Reports on NMR Spectroscopy

Annual Reports on NMR Spectroscopy PDF Author: Graham A. Webb
Publisher: Academic Press
ISBN: 0124079040
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 440

Book Description
Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is an analytical tool used by chemists and physicists to study the structure and dynamics of molecules. In recent years, no other technique has gained such significance as NMR spectroscopy. It is used in all branches of science in which precise structural determination is required and in which the nature of interactions and reactions in solution is being studied. Annual Reports on NMR Spectroscopy has established itself as a premier means for the specialist and non-specialist alike to become familiar with new techniques and applications of NMR spectroscopy. - This volume of Annual Reports on NMR Spectroscopy focuses on the analytical tool used by chemists and physicists and inlcudes topics such as Profiling of Food Samples, Recent Advances in Solution NMR Studies and Magic Angle Spinning NMR Studies of Protein Assemblies

Platinum Coordination Complexes in Cancer Chemotherapy

Platinum Coordination Complexes in Cancer Chemotherapy PDF Author: Miles P. Hacker
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461328373
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 387

Book Description
The idea for convening a Fourth International Symposium on Platinum Coordination Complexes in Cancer Chemotherapy was born in an assembly of researchers from the Vermont Regional Cancer Center and the Norris Cotton Cancer Center who shared a common interest in metal complexes. It was agreed by those assembled that sufficient time had passed since the Third International Symposium on Platinum Coor dination Complexes in Cancer Chemotherapy held in 1976 at the Wadley Institutes of Molecular Medicine in Dallas, Texas, during which several advances in the chemistry, biochemistry, pharmacology and clinical use of platinum complexes had occurred, to warrant a fourth symposium. Furthermore, intensive investigations in progress were bringing sophisticated methodologies to bear on the problems in the field, clinical trials were yielding interesting results, and unique approaches to cancer therapy were being designed. Therefore, an organizing committee was formed and planning culminated in the symposium which was held in Burlington, Vermont, June 22-24, 1983.

Essential Metals in Medicine: Therapeutic Use and Toxicity of Metal Ions in the Clinic

Essential Metals in Medicine: Therapeutic Use and Toxicity of Metal Ions in the Clinic PDF Author: Peggy L. Carver
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG
ISBN: 3110526980
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 640

Book Description
Volume 19, entitled Essential Metals in Medicine: Therapeutic Use and Toxicity of Metal Ions in the Clinic of the series Metal Ions in Life Sciences centers on the role of metal ions in clinical medicine. Metal ions are tightly regulated in human health: while essential to life, they can be toxic as well. Following an introductory chapter briefly discussing several important metal-related drugs and diseases and a chapter about drug development, the focus is fi rst on iron: its essentiality for pathogens and humans as well as its toxicity. Chelation therapy is addressed in the context of thalassemia, its relationship to neurodegenerative diseases and also the risks connected with iron administration are pointed out. A subject of intense debate is the essentiality of chromium and vanadium. For example, chromium(III) compounds are taken as a nutritional supplement by athletes and bodybuilders; in contrast, chromate, Cr(VI), is toxic and a carcinogen for humans. The benefi cial and toxic effects of manganese, cobalt, and copper on humans are discussed. The need for antiparasitic agents is emphasized as well as the clinical aspects of metal-containing antidotes for cyanide poisoning. In addition to the essential and possibly essential ones, also other metal ions play important roles in human health, causing harm (like the metalloid arsenic, lead or cadmium) or being used in diagnosis or treatment of human diseases, like gadolinium, gallium, lithium, gold, silver or platinum. The impact of this vibrant research area on metals in the clinic is provided in 14 stimulating chapters, written by internationally recognized experts from the Americas, Europe and China, and is manifested by approximately 2000 references, and about 90 illustrations and tables. Essential Metals in Medicine: Therapeutic Use and Toxicity of Metal Ions in the Clinic is an essential resource for scientists working in the wide range from pharmacology, enzymology, material sciences, analytical, organic, and inorganic biochemistry all the way through to medicine ... not forgetting that it also provides excellent information for teaching.
