The (In)Coherence of Divine Mercy

The (In)Coherence of Divine Mercy PDF Author: Ian B. Turner
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004699600
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 360

Book Description
How do texts of Scripture make sense or hold together as a unity? This question is especially germane to the Masoretic Text of Hosea, which is often seen as an unintegrated composition by some, or an artful literary whole by others. Such judgments often come without clear definitions and criteria for (in)coherence. This book brings descriptive clarity to this issue through a discourse analysis of cohesion and coherence in Hosea 12–14 based on Systemic Functional Linguistics. This study showcases the theme of divine mercy in Hosea 12–14 and gives readers tools for discourse-linguistic analysis of the Hebrew Bible.

Truth and Singularity

Truth and Singularity PDF Author: Rudi Visker
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9780792363972
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 430

Book Description
In these essays, Visker (Fund for Scientific Research, Institute of Philosophy) responds both to those critics of Foucault who place post- structuralism in opposition to phenomenology and those who dismiss Foucault's work out of hand as crass relativism. The essays consider the relationship between Foucault's work to that of the phenomenologists (especially Heidegger), the role of intersubjectivity in the works of Foucault and Merleau-Ponty, and the view of the self that emerges from the writings of Foucault and Levinas. Antigone's Claim

Antigone's Claim PDF Author: Judith Butler
Publisher: Columbia University Press
ISBN: 0231518048
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 118

Book Description
The celebrated author of Gender Trouble here redefines Antigone's legacy, recovering her revolutionary significance and liberating it for a progressive feminism and sexual politics. Butler's new interpretation does nothing less than reconceptualize the incest taboo in relation to kinship—and open up the concept of kinship to cultural change. Antigone, the renowned insurgent from Sophocles's Oedipus, has long been a feminist icon of defiance. But what has remained unclear is whether she escapes from the forms of power that she opposes. Antigone proves to be a more ambivalent figure for feminism than has been acknowledged, since the form of defiance she exemplifies also leads to her death. Butler argues that Antigone represents a form of feminist and sexual agency that is fraught with risk. Moreover, Antigone shows how the constraints of normative kinship unfairly decide what will and will not be a livable life. Butler explores the meaning of Antigone, wondering what forms of kinship might have allowed her to live. Along the way, she considers the works of such philosophers as Hegel, Lacan, and Irigaray. How, she asks, would psychoanalysis have been different if it had taken Antigone—the "postoedipal" subject—rather than Oedipus as its point of departure? If the incest taboo is reconceived so that it does not mandate heterosexuality as its solution, what forms of sexual alliance and new kinship might be acknowledged as a result? The book relates the courageous deeds of Antigone to the claims made by those whose relations are still not honored as those of proper kinship, showing how a culture of normative heterosexuality obstructs our capacity to see what sexual freedom and political agency could be.

Publisher: BRILL

Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 544

Book Description
This first volume of the series “Dynamics in the History of Religions” reviews the opening conference of the "Käte Hamburger Kolleg” at the Ruhr-University Bochum. The first section concentrates on the formation of what later come to be termed "world religions" through inter-religious contact, the second part focuses on the significance of interreligious contacts also during their expansive phase. Methodological problems of multi-perspective research and especially the lack of a general religious terminology are discussed in the third chapter, while the final papers outline various aspects of secularization and (re-)sacralisation in the age of globalisation as an effect of multicultural contacts in a world wide web of religious interferences. A Stylistics of Drama

A Stylistics of Drama PDF Author: Peter K. W. Tan
Publisher: NUS Press
ISBN: 9789971691820
Category : Drama
Languages : en
Pages : 266

Book Description
"This study looks at how stylistic methods apply to drama texts, and focuses its attention on Stoppard's Traversties, which, by its parodic nature, compels an investigation of literary parody as an intertextual mode." "The author first seeks to place stylistics within a historical and procedural framework and considers ideological and procedural impasses that have bedevilled stylistic analyses. Detailed analyses of passages from Travesties in the light of what has been discussed then follows."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. All Rights Reserved
