Coarse Grained Simulation and Turbulent Mixing

Coarse Grained Simulation and Turbulent Mixing PDF Author: Fernando F. Grinstein
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1316571742
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 481

Book Description
Small-scale turbulent flow dynamics is traditionally viewed as universal and as enslaved to that of larger scales. In coarse grained simulation (CGS), large energy-containing structures are resolved, smaller structures are spatially filtered out, and unresolved subgrid scale (SGS) effects are modeled. Coarse Grained Simulation and Turbulent Mixing reviews our understanding of CGS. Beginning with an introduction to the fundamental theory the discussion then moves to the crucial challenges of predictability. Next, it addresses verification and validation, the primary means of assessing accuracy and reliability of numerical simulation. The final part reports on the progress made in addressing difficult non-equilibrium applications of timely current interest involving variable density turbulent mixing. The book will be of fundamental interest to graduate students, research scientists, and professionals involved in the design and analysis of complex turbulent flows.

Fundamentals and Technology of Combustion

Fundamentals and Technology of Combustion PDF Author: F El-Mahallawy
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0080532187
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 863

Book Description
Fundamentals and Technology of Combustion contains brief descriptions of combustion fundamental processes, followed by an extensive survey of the combustion research technology. It also includes mathematical combustion modeling of the processes covering mainly premixed and diffusion flames, where many chemical and physical processes compete in complex ways, for both laminar and turbulent flows. The combustion chemistry models that validate experimental data for different fuels are sufficiently accurate to allow confident predictions of the flame characteristics. This illustrates a unique bridge between combustion fundamentals and combustion technology, which provides a valuable technical reference for many engineers and scientists. Moreover, the book gives the reader sufficient background of basic engineering sciences such as chemistry, thermodynamics, heat transfer and fluid mechanics. The combustion research and mathematical models fit between small-scale laboratory burner flames, and large-scale industrial boilers, furnaces and combustion chambers. The materials have been collected from previous relevant research and some selected papers of the authors and co-workers, which have been presented mainly in different refereed journals, international conferences and symposia, thus providing a comprehensive collection. Furthermore, the book includes some of the many recent general correlations for the characteristics of laminar, turbulent, premixed and diffusion flames in an easily usable form. The authors believe that further progress in optimizing combustion performance and reducing polluting emissions can only be treated through understanding of combustion chemistry.

Unsteady Combustion

Unsteady Combustion PDF Author: F. Culick
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9400916205
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 560

Book Description
This book contains selected papers prepared for the NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Unsteady Combustion", which was held in Praia da Granja, Portugal, 6-17 September 1993. Approximately 100 delegates from 14 countries attended. The Institute was the most recent in a series beginning with "Instrumentation for Combustion and Flow in Engines", held in Vimeiro, Portugal 1987 and followed by "Combusting Flow Diagnostics" conducted in Montechoro, Portugal in 1990. Together, these three Institutes have covered a wide range of experimental and theoretical topics arising in the research and development of combustion systems with particular emphasis on gas-turbine combustors and internal combustion engines. The emphasis has evolved roughly from instrumentation and experimental techniques to the mixture of experiment, theory and computational work covered in the present volume. As the title of this book implies, the chief aim of this Institute was to provide a broad sampling of problems arising with time-dependent behaviour in combustors. In fact, of course, that intention encompasses practically all possibilities, for "steady" combustion hardly exists if one looks sufficiently closely at the processes in a combustion chamber. The point really is that, apart from the excellent paper by Bahr (Chapter 10) discussing the technology of combustors for aircraft gas turbines, little attention is directed to matters of steady performance. The volume is divided into three parts devoted to the subjects of combustion-induced oscillations; combustion in internal combustion engines; and experimental techniques and modelling.
