Climate Governance in the Arctic
Author: Timo Koivurova
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1402095422
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 458
Book Description
Climate change is affecting the Arctic environment and ecosystems at an accelerating speed, twice the rate of the global average. This is opening the Arctic to transportation and resource development and creating serious challenges for local communities and indigenous peoples. Climate Governance in the Arctic considers two aspects of climate change from an institutional perspective. It focuses on how relevant regimes, institutions and governance systems support mitigation of climate change. It also examines the extent to which the varying governance arrangements in the Arctic support adaptation and the development of adaptation processes for the region. The book’s focus on Arctic governance offers unique insights within climate change mitigation and adaptation research.

The Use of Emissions Trading in Relation to Other Means of Reducing Emissions
Author:
Publisher: Nordic Council of Ministers
ISBN: 9289313404
Category : CO2-udslip
Languages : en
Pages : 123
Book Description
For quite a long time the Nordic countries have had explicitly formulated climate change strategies and have used various measures intended to curb emissions. Since 1 January 2005 an emissions trading scheme is in operation within the European Union, after several years of preparation. When setting climate policies the Nordic countries must take this new instrument in to account, and try and find the right balance between emissions trading and other means of reducing emissions. This study analyzes how the Nordic countries have dealt with or plan to deal with the conditions of the EU emissions trading system and the relation to other measures to curb emissions.

Energy Policies of IEA Countries
Urban Form, Transportation and Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Author: Irmeli Harmaajärvi
Publisher: Nordic Council of Ministers
ISBN: 9289310456
Category : City planning
Languages : en
Pages : 93
Book Description
Urban sprawl has continued to spread in the Nordic countries over the past few decades, increasing the amount of transportation and transport-related greenhouse gas emissions. Urban planners need to take measures to reduce these ecological effects. Accessible, functional public transportation and high-quality cycling and walking networks will help reduce greenhouse gases, improve air quality and traffic safety, and create a more livable urban environment. We can further control the development of urban form and transportation systems through urban design, certain types of taxation, financing of urban infrastructure, traffic pricing, and parking policies. Planning alone cannot stop the urban sprawl. When considering and assessing different measures on a national level, we need to seriously consider legislative and fiscal issues, citizen participation, and other background forces. We need cooperation between researchers, politicians, civil servants, and citizens to better understand the economic, social, and environmental long-term effects of decisions concerning urban development, and we need a continuing discussion of urban-form problems in the Nordic countries to develop national solutions. This publication explores these issues.
