The research vessel DR. FRIDTJOF NANSEN operated for 18 years (1975 to 1993), surveying shelves and slopes of tropical and subtropical regions. The main objective was to provide developing countries with relevant information on their fishery resources, including distribution and biomass estimates that could be used for estimating stock potentials. The vessel was funded by the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD), the United Nations Development Programme (UNEP) and operated through a cooperation between the Institute of Marine Research (IMR) and FAO.
