Legitimizing ESS

Legitimizing ESS PDF Author: Thomas Kaiserfeld
Publisher: Nordic Academic Press
ISBN: 9187351463
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 259

Book Description
"Big Science" is a broad epithet that can be associated with research projects that involve huge budgets, big facilities, complex instrumentation, years of planning, and large multidisciplinary teams of researchers. Legitimizing the ESS examines the complexity of the cultural, social, and political processes from which and in which Big Science develops by focusing on the planning and development of the European Spallation Source, ESS, that is to be located in Lund in southern Sweden. Together, the chapters represent a variety of perspectives to highlight the complexity of the processes that are integral to Big Science. Thus, this volume examines the very different roles Big Science may be given in different contexts: locally, regionally, nationally, internationally, as well as historically.

Cooperative Stewardship

Cooperative Stewardship PDF Author: National Research Council
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309068312
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 90

Book Description
The Committee on Developing a Federal Materials Facilities Strategy was appointed by the National Research Council (NRC) in response to a request by the federal agencies involved in funding and operating multidisciplinary user facilities for research with synchrotron radiation, neutrons, and high magnetic fields. Starting in August 1996, a series of conversations and meetings was held among NRC staff and officials from the National Science Foundation, the Department of Energy, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (Department of Commerce), and the National Institutes of Health. The agencies were concerned that facilities originally developed to support research in materials science were increasingly used by scientists from other fields-particularly the biological sciences-whose research was supported by agencies other than those responsible for the facilities. This trend, together with the introduction of several new, large user facilities in the last decade, led the agencies to seek advice on the possible need for interagency cooperation in the management of these federal research facilities.

Between Science And Industry: Institutions In The History Of Materials Research

Between Science And Industry: Institutions In The History Of Materials Research PDF Author: Robert P Crease
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9811284350
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 755

Book Description
Materials science institutions have always been crucial to the development of materials research. Even before materials science emerged as a discipline in the 20th century, these institutions existed in various forms. They provided specialized facilities for research, educated new generations of researchers, drafted policies and funded programs, enabled valuable connections between research groups, or played any other role which were needed to further the progress of materials science. This volume, the third in a series of volumes covering the development and history of materials science, presents illuminating perspectives on material science institutions. Twenty chapters are organized into six comprehensive parts of which each cover a characteristic aspect or historical feature. True to the topic they write about, the contributors to this volume have varied backgrounds. Some are materials scientists and engineers, but others are historians, philosophers of science, sociologists, or even directors of institutions themselves. This comprehensive, unified collection is a valuable resource for undergraduates, graduate students, academics, policymakers and professionals who are actively interested in materials science and its development from the past to the future.

An Assessment of the National Institute of Standards and Technology Center for Neutron Research

An Assessment of the National Institute of Standards and Technology Center for Neutron Research PDF Author: National Research Council
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309144973
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 28

Book Description
The National Institute of Standards and Technology [NIST] Center for Neutron Research (NCNR) is a national user facility whose mission is to ensure the availability of neutron measurement capabilities in order to meet the needs of U.S. researchers from industry, academia, and government agencies. This mission is aligned with the mission of NIST, which is to promote U.S. innovation and industrial competitiveness by advancing measurement science, standards, and technology in ways that enhance economic security and improve the quality of life. As requested by the Deputy Director of NIST, this book assesses NCNR, based on the following criteria: (1) the technical merit of the current laboratory programs relative to current state-of-the-art programs worldwide; (2) the adequacy of the laboratory budget, facilities, equipment, and human resources, as they affect the quality of the laboratory technical programs; and (3) the degree to which the laboratory programs in measurement science and standards achieve their stated objectives and desired impact.

Opportunities in High Magnetic Field Science

Opportunities in High Magnetic Field Science PDF Author: National Research Council
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309165318
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 188

Book Description
High-field magnetsâ€"those that operate at the limits of the mechanical and/or electromagnetic properties of their structural materialsâ€"are used as research tools in a variety of scientific disciplines. The study of high magnetic fields themselves is also important in many areas such as astrophysics. Because of their importance in scientific research and the possibility of new breakthroughs, the National Science Foundation asked the National Research Council to assess the current state of and future prospects for high-field science and technology in the United States. This report presents the results of that assessment. It focuses on scientific and technological challenges and opportunities, and not on specific program activities. The report provides findings and recommendations about important research directions, the relative strength of U.S. efforts compared to other countries, and ways in which the program can operate more effectively.
