Book Description
Regular RF pulse trains used in NMR can be studied with simple algorithms of polynomial type using the Z transform. Another simplification is brought by the use of spinors to model the rotations. The first application presented is a ‘peel-off' algorithm which permits the synthesis of selective radiofrequency pulses as the ones used in MRI. This algorithm makes the non linearity of the Bloch equations easy to handle. Some unpublished implementation details are given along with some theoretical results concerning the convergence of the hard pulse train approximation and the prediction of the energy deposition. The same tools are subsequently used to obtain a simplified model of the CPMG and SSFP sequences. The echo to echo rotation is studied and the natural stabilization of the signals is explained by the dispersion of phase. The relaxation processes during such sequences are also modelled in a simplified but widely applicable manner. A previous polynomials stabilization algorithm is explained in terms of a discrete version of the adiabatic principle. The last chapter tackles with a non-CPMG sequence which is insensitive to the initial phase of the magnetization. This sequence is based on a quadratic phase modulation of the RF pulse train.

Quantum Mechanics, Volume 3

Quantum Mechanics, Volume 3 PDF Author: Claude Cohen-Tannoudji
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 3527345558
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 790

Book Description
This new, third volume of Cohen-Tannoudji's groundbreaking textbook covers advanced topics of quantum mechanics such as uncorrelated and correlated identical particles, the quantum theory of the electromagnetic field, absorption, emission and scattering of photons by atoms, and quantum entanglement. Written in a didactically unrivalled manner, the textbook explains the fundamental concepts in seven chapters which are elaborated in accompanying complements that provide more detailed discussions, examples and applications. * Completing the success story: the third and final volume of the quantum mechanics textbook written by 1997 Nobel laureate Claude Cohen-Tannoudji and his colleagues Bernard Diu and Franck Laloë * As easily comprehensible as possible: all steps of the physical background and its mathematical representation are spelled out explicitly * Comprehensive: in addition to the fundamentals themselves, the books comes with a wealth of elaborately explained examples and applications Claude Cohen-Tannoudji was a researcher at the Kastler-Brossel laboratory of the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris where he also studied and received his PhD in 1962. In 1973 he became Professor of atomic and molecular physics at the Collège des France. His main research interests were optical pumping, quantum optics and atom-photon interactions. In 1997, Claude Cohen-Tannoudji, together with Steven Chu and William D. Phillips, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for his research on laser cooling and trapping of neutral atoms. Bernard Diu was Professor at the Denis Diderot University (Paris VII). He was engaged in research at the Laboratory of Theoretical Physics and High Energy where his focus was on strong interactions physics and statistical mechanics. Franck Laloë was a researcher at the Kastler-Brossel laboratory of the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris. His first assignment was with the University of Paris VI before he was appointed to the CNRS, the French National Research Center. His research was focused on optical pumping, statistical mechanics of quantum gases, musical acoustics and the foundations of quantum mechanics.

Understanding Heritage in Practice

Understanding Heritage in Practice PDF Author: Susie West
Publisher: Manchester University Press
ISBN: 9780719081545
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 328

Book Description
Written by an interdisciplinary team of scholars, this authoritative text explores how heritage is delivered and consumed in a global world, and the ever-increasing ways in which heritage is actively valued. New international case studies see heritage as social action, as performance, and as a vehicle for innovations in tourism, challenging the notion that only official heritage practices can successfully select and interpret our links with the past. Aimed primarily at students in heritage studies and professionals in heritage industries, this is book two of three in the Understanding Global Heritage series.

Mirror of the World

Mirror of the World PDF Author: Julian Bell
Publisher: National Geographic Books
ISBN: 0500287546
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
“Exuberant, astute, and splendidly illustrated history of world art . . . draws fascinating parallels between artistic developments in Western and non-Western art.”—Publishers Weekly In this beautifully written story of art, Julian Bell tells a vivid and compelling history of human artistic achievements, from prehistoric stone carvings to the latest video installations. Bell, himself a painter, uses a variety of objects to reveal how art is a product of our shared experience and how, like a mirror, it can reflect the human condition. With hundreds of illustrations and a uniquely global perspective, Bell juxtaposes examples that challenge and enlighten the reader: dancing bronze figures from southern India, Romanesque sculptures, Baroque ceilings, and jewel-like Persian manuscripts are discussed side by side. With an insider’s knowledge and an unerring touch, Bell weaves these diverse strands into an invaluable introduction to the wider history of world art.
