Words are wanting to express the sensations which have been excited by Mr. Benfield's letter; but it would be impossible for any man to be so base as to avail himself of such liberality; the recollection of it, together with his many virtues, will long continue deeply impressed on the heart of him, who Mr. Benfield would, if within the power of man, render the happiest amongst human beings.

Not My Kid

Not My Kid PDF Author: Sinikka Elliott
Publisher: NYU Press
ISBN: 0814771343
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 226

Book Description
Teenagers have sex. While almost all parents understand that many teenagers are sexually active, there is a paradox in many parents’ thinking: they insist their own teen children are not sexual, but characterize their children’s peers as sexually-driven and hypersexual. Rather than accuse parents of being in denial, Sinikka Elliott teases out the complex dynamics behind this thinking, demonstrating that it is rooted in fears and anxieties about being a good parent, the risks of teen sexual activity, and teenagers’ future economic and social status. Parents—like most Americans—equate teen sexuality with heartache, disease, pregnancy, promiscuity, and deviance and want their teen children to be protected from these things.Going beyond the hype and controversy, Elliott examines how a diverse group of American parents of teenagers understand teen sexuality, showing that, in contrast to the idea that parents are polarized in their beliefs, parents are confused, anxious, and ambivalent about teen sexual activity and how best to guide their own children’s sexuality. Framed with an eye to the debates about teenage abstinence and sex education in school, Elliott also links parents’ understandings to the contradictory messages and broad moral panic around child and teen sexuality. Ultimately, Elliott considers the social and cultural conditions that might make it easier for parents to talk with their teens about sex, calling for new ways of thinking and talking about teen sexuality that promote social justice and empower parents to embrace their children as fully sexual subjects.

For Her Own Good

For Her Own Good PDF Author: Barbara Ehrenreich
Publisher: Anchor
ISBN: 0307764168
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 434

Book Description
This women's history classic brilliantly exposed the constraints imposed on women in the name of science and exposes the myths used to control them. Since the the nineteenth century, professionals have been invoking scientific expertise to prescribe what women should do for their own good. Among the experts’ diagnoses and remedies: menstruation was an illness requiring seclusion; pregnancy, a disabling condition; and higher education, a threat to long-term health of the uterus. From clitoridectomies to tame women’s behavior in the nineteenth century to the censure of a generation of mothers as castrators in the 1950s, doctors have not hesitated to intervene in women’s sexual, emotional, and maternal lives. Even domesticity, the most popular prescription for a safe environment for woman, spawned legions of “scientific” experts. Barbara Ehrenreich and Dierdre English has never lost faith in science itself, butinsist that we hold those who interpret it to higher standards. Women are entering the medical and scientific professions in greater numbers but as recent research shows, experts continue to use pseudoscience to tell women how to live. For Her Own Good provides today’s readers with an indispensable dose of informed skepticism.

Pages : 292

Book Description
It is said that one never forgets oneÍs first love. But rarely does that love transcend all other things, becoming an obsession, a career, or a reason for living. First-time novelist and renowned literary critic Bruce-Novoa explores the very relationship between love and art in this highly lyrical and experimental novel set to the backdrop of the babyboomer era, especially as expressed in film, music and popular culture from the 1960s to the 1980s. The protagonist, a talented cinematographer, sees his beloved everywhere, in his mind as well as through the lens of his camera. Despite the turns of fortune that have determined PaulÍs life, a series of lovers and even marriage to another, Paul clings to the hope of ultimately finding his true love and living out the rest of his life with her. Obsession and the fateful possibility of reunion are the suspenseful, driving forces behind this artful romance.
