Some Design Considerations in Submarine Hydraulic Systems
FLUIDS FOR SUBMARINE EXTERNAL HYDRAULIC SYSTEMS.

Pages : 56
Book Description
A successful search was made for petroleum-base hydraulic fluids with rust-inhibiting qualities adequate to prevent rusting in submarine hydraulic systems contaminated with seawater. Fluids of two types were found with considerably greater rust-inhibiting ability than currently used Navy hydraulic fluids. The type of fluid giving the better rust inhibition deviated from present hydraulic fluid specification requirements in that it emulsified readily with contaminating seawater, whereas the second type did not. Other necessary properties of both fluid types were satisfactory. Feasibility of using the emulsifying-type fluid in submarine hydraulic systems was shown by 1000 hr of satisfactory operation using a hydraulic system mock-up with full scale submarine system components in the presence of 10% sea-water contamination. Technical specification requirements for this type fluid were drawn up.

Evaluation of Submarine Hydraulic System Explosion and Fire Hazards

Book Description
Although hydraulic fluids are generally considered to be low flammable liquids, it is known that they can be highly flammable and even explosive in the atomized state. Because submarine hydraulic systems operate at high pressures, it is possible that mists could be produced in the event of a system leak. Large-scale tests were conducted aboard the ex-USS Shadwell test platform, under realistic temperature and pressure conditions, to evaluate the magnitude of the hazards. It was found that a significant fire and explosion potential does exist under conditions typical of normal hydraulic system operations.

Submarine Hydraulic Control Analysis

Book Description
A mathematical model was developed to include the effects in the submarine hydraulic system dynamic performance analysis. The project was undertaken in an effort to demonstrate the necessity of coupling the entire hydraulic power network for an accurate analysis of any of the subsystems rather than the current practice of treating a component loop as an isolated system. It was intended that the line model could be coupled with individual elements in modular computer programs to facilitate design and alteration decisions. The line model was developed and coupled with a submarine driving-system servo-loop in order to demonstrate the above premises. However, due to programming difficulties additional work is necessary to successfully complete the analysis. (Author).

Book Description
Originally printed in 1946, The Fleet Type Submarine series of technical manuals remains unparalleled. Contained in its pages and those of the companion texts are descriptions of every operating component aboard a fleet boat. Air Systems, Navpers 16164, was originally written to acquaint submarine crews with the submarine¿s compressed air system. This vital system provides the hydraulic system with pressure, discharges torpedoes, blows tanks and maintains trim, and even provides the oxygen used to start the main diesel engines. The book explores all five air systems on a fleet boat. It offers explanatory text and numerous, detailed diagrams.Originally classified ¿Restricted¿, this book was recently declassified and is here reprinted in book form. Some illustrations and fold-outs have been reformatted, and color plates are reproduced in black and white. Care has been taken to preserve the integrity of the text.

Concepts in Submarine Design
Author: Roy Burcher
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 9780521559263
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 320
Book Description
This book explores the many engineering and architectural aspects of submarine design and how they relate to each other and the operational performance required of the vessel. Concepts of hydrodynamics, structure, powering and dynamics are explained, in addition to architectural considerations which bear on the submarine design process. The interplay between these aspects of design is given particular attention, and a final chapter is devoted to the generation of the concept design for the submarine as a whole. Submarine design makes extensive use of computer aids, and examples of algorithms used in concept design are given. The emphasis in the book is on providing engineering insight as well as an understanding of the intricacies of the submarine design process. It will serve as a text for students and as a reference manual for practising engineers and designers.
