Transonic, Shock, and Multidimensional Flows

Transonic, Shock, and Multidimensional Flows PDF Author: Richard E. Meyer
Publisher: Academic Press
ISBN: 1483264602
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 356

Book Description
Mathematics Research Center Symposium: Transonic, Shock, and Multidimensional Flows: Advances in Scientific Computing covers the lectures presented at a Symposium on Transonic, Shock, and Multidimensional Flows, held in Madison on May 13-15, 1981, under the auspices of the Mathematics Research Center of the University of Wisconsin. The book focuses on the advancements in the scientific computation of high-speed aerodynamic phenomena and related fluid motions. The selection first elaborates on computational fluid dynamics of airfoils and wings; shock-free configurations in two- and three-dimensional transonic flow; and steady-state solution of the Euler equations for transonic flow. Discussions focus on boundary conditions, convergence acceleration, indirect design of airfoils, and trailing edge and the boundary layer. The text then examines the calculation of transonic potential flow past three-dimensional configurations and remarks on the numerical solution of Tricomi-type equations. The manuscript ponders on the design and numerical analysis of vortex methods, shock calculations and the numerical solution of singular perturbation problems, tracking of interfaces for fluid flow, and transonic flows with viscous effects. Topics include numerical algorithm, difference approximation for scalar equations, boundary conditions, transonic flow in a tube, and governing equations. The selection is a dependable reference for researchers interested in transonic, shock, and multidimensional flows.

Transonic Aerodynamics

Transonic Aerodynamics PDF Author: L. Pamela Cook
Publisher: SIAM
ISBN: 0898713102
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 98

Book Description
This volume offers exciting results, perspectives, and case studies for the treatment of problems arising in transonic aerodynamics. New advances including triple deck theory, analysis of stagnation at the nose of a body, transonic choked flow, and the transonic area rule are presented. Interest in analyzing the transonic range of flight, its stability properties, and especially the question of designing reduced drag (shockless or weak shock) airfoils keeps growing. Present day commercial aircraft cruise in the transonic range. Mechanical and aeronautical engineers interested in compressible fluid flows, design of optimal wings, and an understanding of transonic flow held about wings and airfoils will find the book invaluable. This book is understandable to those with a knowledge of continuum mechanics (fluids) and asymptotic methods. It is appropriate for graduate courses in aerodynamics and mathematical methods.

Fluid Dynamics for the Study of Transonic Flow

Fluid Dynamics for the Study of Transonic Flow PDF Author: Heinrich J. Ramm
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA
ISBN: 0195060970
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 211

Book Description
This new book leads readers step-by-step through the complexities encountered as moving objects approach and cross the sound barrier. The problems of transonic flight were apparent with the very first experimental flights of scale-model rockets when the disastrous impact of shock waves and flow separations caused the aircraft to spin wildly out of control. Today many of these problems have been overcome, and this book offers an introduction to the transonic theory that has made possible many of these advances. The emphasis is on the most important basic approaches to the solution of transonic problems. The book also includes explanations of common pitfalls that must be avoided. An effort has been made to derive the most important equations of inviscid and viscous transonic flow in sufficient detail so that even novices may feel confident in their problem-solving ability. The use of computer approaches is reviewed, with references to the extensive literature in this area, while the critical shortcomings of an exclusive reliance on computational methods are also described. The book will be valuable to anyone who needs to acquire an understanding of transonic flow, including practicing engineers as well as students of fluid mechanics.

A Method for the Design of Transonic Flexible Wings

A Method for the Design of Transonic Flexible Wings PDF Author: National Aeronautics and Space Adm Nasa

Book Description
Methodology was developed for designing airfoils and wings at transonic speeds which includes a technique that can account for static aeroelastic deflections. This procedure is capable of designing either supercritical or more conventional airfoil sections. Methods for including viscous effects are also illustrated and are shown to give accurate results. The methodology developed is an interactive system containing three major parts. A design module was developed which modifies airfoil sections to achieve a desired pressure distribution. This design module works in conjunction with an aerodynamic analysis module, which for this study is a small perturbation transonic flow code. Additionally, an aeroelastic module is included which determines the wing deformation due to the calculated aerodynamic loads. Because of the modular nature of the method, it can be easily coupled with any aerodynamic analysis code. Smith, Leigh Ann and Campbell, Richard L. Langley Research Center RTOP 505-61-21-03...

Introduction to Transonic Aerodynamics

Introduction to Transonic Aerodynamics PDF Author: Roelof Vos
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 9401797471
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 561

Book Description
Written to teach students the nature of transonic flow and its mathematical foundation, this book offers a much-needed introduction to transonic aerodynamics. The authors present a quantitative and qualitative assessment of subsonic, supersonic and transonic flow around bodies in two and three dimensions. The book reviews the governing equations and explores their applications and limitations as employed in modeling and computational fluid dynamics. Some concepts, such as shock and expansion theory, are examined from a numerical perspective. Others, including shock-boundary-layer interaction, are discussed from a qualitative point of view. The book includes 60 examples and more than 200 practice problems. The authors also offer analytical methods such as Method of Characteristics (MOC) that allow readers to practice with the subject matter. The result is a wealth of insight into transonic flow phenomena and their impact on aircraft design, including compressibility effects, shock and expansion waves, shock-boundary-layer interaction and aeroelasticity.
