Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences

Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences PDF Author: Wade H. Shafer
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461305993
Category : Science
Languages : en

Book Description
Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1 957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 32 (thesis year 1987) a total of 12,483 theses titles from 22 Canadian and 176 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 32 reports theses submitted in 1987, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Climate Change Impact and Adaptation in Agricultural Systems

Climate Change Impact and Adaptation in Agricultural Systems PDF Author: Jurg Fuhrer
Publisher: CABI
ISBN: 178064289X
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 307

Book Description
The focus of this book is future global climate change and its implications for agricultural systems which are the main sources of agricultural goods and services provided to society. These systems are either based on crop or livestock production, or on combinations of the two, with characteristics that differ between regions and between levels of management intensity. In turn, they also differ in their sensitivity to projected future changes in climate, and improvements to increase climate-resilience need to be tailored to the specific needs of each system. The book will bring together a series of chapters that provide scientific insights to possible implications of projected climate changes for different important types of crop and livestock systems, and a discussion of options for adaptive and mitigative management.

Forage Legumes as Living Mulches in Tree Plantations

Forage Legumes as Living Mulches in Tree Plantations PDF Author: Joseph L. Alley

Category : Forage plants

Pages : 328

Book Description
Living mulches offer an alternative method of weed control in forest plantations when conventional methods will not suffice. This study was designed to identify effective living mulches for use in Central Missouri. Tree seedling growth factors for eastern black walnut (Juglans nigra L.), honeylocust (Gleditsia triacanthos L.), and pitch x loblolly pine hybrid (Pinus rigida L. x P. taeda L.) were measured as the trees were grown in ten different ground cover treatments (GCTs). These included eight forage-type leguminous living mulches (small and large white clover, Trifolium repens L.; red clover, T. pratense L.; kura clover, T. ambiguum Bieb.; strawberry clover, T. fragiferum L.; birdsfoot trefoil, Lotus corniculatus L.; hairy vetch, Vicia villosa Roth; and 'AU Early' hairy vetch, V. villosa Roth) and two controls (tall fescue, Festuca arundinacea Schreb.; and vegetation free maintained with herbicide). Overall, tree seedling growth factors were affected positively by the vegetation free GCT and negatively by the tall fescue GCT, with legume responses falling between these extremes. Within leguminous living mulches, the following significant observations were made. The vetches positively affected honeylocust diameter, height growth and leaf weight, while negatively affecting pine height, diameter growth and needle length. Birdsfoot trefoil had a positive effect on bare-root walnut leaf area. White and Ladino clover positively affected containerized walnut diameter and height growth as well as bare-root walnut leaf weight. Red clover positively affected honeylocust diameter growth and leaf weight. Strawberry clover negatively affected bare-root walnut leaf area. Percent cover and dry weight for the GCTs were also compared.
