The Songs of Aristophanes

The Songs of Aristophanes PDF Author: L. P. E. Parker
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 9780198149446
Category : Drama
Languages : en
Pages : 618

Book Description
A comedy of Aristophanes was in large measure a musical performance, and his lyric verse covers a wide range of styles - from popular song to parody of tragedy. The music is lost, and our only way of recovering something of the experience of an Athenian audience is by studying the rhythms of the poetry. This book provides a full text, with scansions, of the lyric of the surviving plays, and an introduction to the different rhythms used by Aristophanes, their origins, and literary associations. Dr Parker pays particular attention to the role played by lyric metre in the structure of the plays and to distinguishing the different levels of metrical style, thus illustrating the integral part metre plays in Aristophanes' dramatic art and satire. She also discusses fully the metrical aspects of textual problems in Aristophanes' lyric, and a section of the introduction traces the evolution of the study of Aristophanes' metres and the influence this has had on the text.

Andronikos Kallistos: a Byzantine Scholar and His Manuscripts in Italian Humanism

Andronikos Kallistos: a Byzantine Scholar and His Manuscripts in Italian Humanism PDF Author: Luigi Orlandi
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG
ISBN: 3111203441
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 644

Book Description
The interest in Andronikos Kallistos, a leading personality among the Greek émigrés who participated in Italian Humanism, arose at the end of the nineteenth century within the frame of the studies on Byzantine scholars of the Renaissance. Researchers have only glimpsed the depth of Kallistos' erudite personality. To date, nearly 130 manuscripts have been found bearing evidence of his work as a copyist and philologist. However, research into both his scribal and scholarly activity remains fragmented into many isolated contributions, mainly concerning specific chapters of the manuscript tradition of classical Greek authors. Adopting a synergistic approach to historical, philological, codicological, and paleographic data within this framework, this monograph study aims to fulfil the following tasks: outlining an updated biography; defining Kallistos' scribal activity better by means of a thorough examination of all surviving manuscript sources; attempting to reconstruct the development of his book collection; acknowledging Kallistos' scholarly activity both as a teacher and philologist; making an inventory of all the manuscripts which bear traces of his writing; and, finally, publishing Kallistos' works.

Aristophanea

Aristophanea PDF Author: N. G. Wilson
Publisher: OUP Oxford
ISBN: 0191569399
Category : Literary Collections
Languages : en
Pages : 232

Book Description
This book is designed as a companion to the new OCT of Aristophanes. After a brief introduction giving a sketch of the textual transmission of the plays the editor discusses a large number of passages which present textual or other difficulties. Problems of this kind in many cases require notes that are too long and complex to be incorporated in the relatively limited space allocated to the apparatus criticus in the Oxford series.

History of Ancient Greek Scholarship

History of Ancient Greek Scholarship PDF Author:
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004430571
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 717

Book Description
This book aims to offer a unified historical treatment of all that is usually understood as “ancient scholarship” or “ancient philology” and is the first modern work to cover a period from the beginnings to the fall of Byzantium after John Edwin Sandys’ work published between 1903-1908. The field “ancient scholarship” includes the exegesis of Greek authors, the editing of their texts, orderly collections of materials useful for exegetical purposes – such as lexeis, onomatologies, collections of antiquarian materials et similia –, the study of grammar, reflection on language, and everything that can be linked to this sphere, that is to say literature and the instruments for interpreting it. If it is hard today to imagine such a work being undertaken by a single scholar, it is worth underlining the benefits offered by a volume with multiple expert voices in a field so complex and multiform. The book is based on the four historiographical chapters of Brill's Companion to Ancient Greek Scholarship (2015), which have been enlarged, updated and rethought.
