This research examined the relationships among structural empowerment, psychological empowerment and burnout in a sample of staff nurses working in chronic hemodialysis units. The study examined relationships between the independent variable, structural empowerment and the dependent variable burnout, as well as exploring the relationship between psychological empowerment and burnout and between the two independent variables structural empowerment and psychological empowerment. A mediation model was tested to explain the relationship between structural empowerment, psychological empowerment and burnout. A correlational research design was used. A convenience sample of 233 staff nurses between the ages of 24 and 68 was attained from a national organization of nephrology nurses. While healthcare is struggling to respond to patients’ care needs as well as budgetary realities, patient care is increasingly more burdensome and demanding for nurses, resulting in increased burnout. Burnout has negative consequences for affected nurses and can jeopardize quality of care and patient safety. The empowerment of nurses is closely related to workplace wellness, since it is viewed as a positive strategy to support nursing practice and well-being at work. Research indicates that professional websites are promising vehicles to address nurse empowerment, with the recommendation that they be engaged in the design process. To date, there is no information to assess the severity of burnout or the empowerment status of hemodialysis nurses in Quebec. A quantitative online survey of 308 nurses assessed this situation and found that 38% reported high levels of emotional exhaustion, 69% reported moderate levels of structural mpowerment and 64% moderate levels of psychological empowerment. Structural and psychological empowerment were significantly related to burnout. Subsequently, a participatory action research approach that included a series of three focus group sessions with a total of seven participants and consultations with an Advisory Team generated recommendations on the types of information and elements to include in a website that addresses burnout and promotes empowerment. The results indicated that a future website should include: professional information and updates, continuing education, information on healthy lifestyle habits and networking. Overall, this research has important implications for nurses and nursing practice and research. We found high levels of burnout among hemodialysis nurses in Quebec, similar to other North American results; and that hemodialysis nurses support the development of a website to address their professional and personal needs.

Burnout has been theorized as occurring within the early years of a career. Role stress, which has three components; role ambiguity, role conflict and role overload, has been identified in new graduate nurses and has been positively correlated with burnout in the empirical literature. Empowerment has an inverse relationship with burnout. Support for these hypothesized relationships in newly graduated nurses has been demonstrated in research conducted in other countries. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship among role stress, empowerment, and burnout in newly graduated nurses with two years of experience or less working in acute care hospitals. A descriptive correlational research design was utilized to examine the hypothesized relationships in a sample of 107 newly graduated nurses. Participants responded to questions online from various instruments which measured role stress, empowerment and burnout. All three role stress variables had significant positive correlations with burnout and empowerment had a significant inverse correlation with burnout. Regression analysis was used to test the hypotheses that empowerment would moderate the relationship between each of the role stress variables and burnout. In this study, 75% of new graduates reported burnout and the moderation model was not supported. Researchers have identified the presence of burnout in newly graduated nurses and the negative impact on the nurse, the patient, the organization and the profession. The findings from this study suggest that health care organizations need to examine and if necessary, improve their work environments. It may be less costly for hospitals to implement strategies to decrease burnout among new graduates such as establishment of an empowering work environment, elimination of role ambiguity, prevention of role conflict and reduction of role overload that are supported in the literature rather than absorb the costly financial impact of burnout.

Burnout is a psychological syndrome that has been linked to an abundance of negative personal and organizational outcomes. Research has proposed that psychological empowerment, resilience and employee engagement can act as potential buffers against burnout in nurses (e.g., Fan, Zheng, Liu, & Li, 2016). The current study aims to investigate the direct effects of psychological empowerment and resilience on burnout, and the mediating effect of employee engagement on these relationships. A sample of 107 midwestern nurses working in care facilities and hospitals was recruited via social media, and completed a survey about their experiences.
