Environmental Aspects of Salmonella in Humans
Author: Donald M. McLean
Publisher: National Research Council of Canada, NRCC Associate Committee on Scientific Criteria for Environmental Quality
ISBN:
Category : Salmonella
Languages : en
Pages : 60
Book Description
Despite generally good sanitation practices throughout Canada during most of the twentieth century, outbreaks of gastroenteritis due to non-typhoid serovars of Salmonella sp. involved 6781 to 11,181 persons each year between 1978 and 1985. Many outbreaks arise from unsanitary food-handling whilst single cases or small clusters of patients may contract salmonellosis through direct or indirect exposure to infected farm animals or domestic pets. Prevalence of particular Salmonella serovars has changed through succeeding years, except for that of Salmonella typhimurium which has remained high every year. The objective of this document is to assemble a quantitative data base relating the number of human cases of salmonellosis per annum of approximately 40 common Salmonella serovars, to the category of location of exposure to the infected environmental source. Costs of health care for infected humans, plus relevant microbiological laboratory investigations for patients and environmental sources of infection, are presented whenever appropriate.
