Deepening the Atlantic
Author: Wolfgang H. Reinicke
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 102
Book Description
With the end of the Cold War, many have argued that the close economic relationship between the United States and Europe should replace the security alliance as the primary basis of the transatlantic partnership. In this book, Wolfgang Reinicke critically assesses the basic premise of such a proposition and examines two concrete proposals that have been made to strengthen transatlantic economic relations--a Transatlantic Free Trade Area (TAFTA) and a New Transatlantic Marketplace. According to Reinicke, a TAFTA is likely to be both too little--tariffs and quantitative restrictions being of importance in a few sectors only--and too much--their elimination being unrealistic in the short term. The idea of a New Transatlantic Marketplace, he says, fits with the fact that the United States and the European Union form the core of the global economy. Keeping its limits and risks in mind, it could provide the relationship with a new foundation for the 21st century.

An Ambiguous Power
Author: Curt Walter Gasteyger
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 168
Book Description
At the end of the twentieth century, the European Union must decide whether to accept the transformation from powerful economic entity to an equally powerful political entity. By doing so, it would assume the responsibilities that correspond to its own potential and influence and that a difficult and disorderly world expects and needs. With the challenges of external enlargement and internal reform, the European Union will have to prove that it can respect the sensitivities and interests of its own members while becoming even more responsive to the needs and expectations of the outside world. In this book, Curt Gasteyger offers a valuable and critical contribution to the ongoing search for a European foreign and security policy identity.

NATO, Britain, France and the FRG
Author: B. Heuser
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 0230377629
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 274
Book Description
Containing the histories (from 1945 to the present) of the nuclear strategies of NATO, Britain and France, and of the defence preferences of the FRG (West Germany), this book shows how strategies were functions of a perceived Soviet threat and an American 'nuclear guarantee'. There were three options for West Europeans: a compromise with differing American needs in NATO, pursued by Britain and the FRG; national nuclear forces, developed by Britain and France; and projects for an independent European nuclear force.

Managing Security in Europe
Author: Franco Algieri
Publisher: Bertelsmann Foundation Publishers
ISBN:
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 280
Book Description
In ten to fifteen years, the European Union could include as many as 25 to 30 member states. In view of such an enlarged Union, a definition of the essential interests regarding foreign and security policy is required, as well as a reform of the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP). Otherwise, the European Union will be unable to effectively tackle the increasing regional and global problems, and as a result of the Union's irresolution, the security of its member states may be impaired. Taking into account the enlargement of the EU with the inclusion of Finland, Austria, and Sweden, the contributors to this book examine the changes taking place in central and eastern Europe, the increasing importance of a broader definition of security, as well as various scenarios for the structure of Europe's security and defense policies. Proposals for future reform of the CFSP are also developed.
