The State of World Highly Migratory, Straddling and Other High Seas Fishery Resources and Associated Species

The State of World Highly Migratory, Straddling and Other High Seas Fishery Resources and Associated Species PDF Author: Jean-Jacques Maguire
Publisher: Food & Agriculture Org.
ISBN: 9789251055540
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 100

Book Description
Fisheries for highly migratory species are important in all oceans and semi-enclosed seas, except for polar regions. Fisheries for straddling fish stocks are much more localised, primarily occurring in a few regions where continental shelves extend beyond the 200 miles Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), while most fisheries for other high seas fishery resources are deep-water fisheries. This publication examines issues relating to the stocks of these resources, including information on their state of exploitation. Findings include that about 30 percent of the stocks of highly migratory tuna and tuna-like species, more than half of highly migratory oceanic sharks and nearly two-thirds of the straddling stocks and the stocks of other high seas fishery resources are overexploited or depleted. Although the stocks concerned represent only a small fraction of the world fishery resources, they are key indicators of the state of an overwhelming part of the ocean ecosystem which appears to be more overexploited than EEZs.

Gender and the Law of the Sea

Gender and the Law of the Sea PDF Author: Irini Papanicolopulu
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004375171
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 388

Book Description
Listen to the podcast with Nilufer Oral on 'Climate Change, Oceans and Gender' In Gender and the Law of the Sea a distinguished group of law of the sea and feminist scholars critically engages with one of the oldest fields of international law. While the law of the sea has been traditionally portrayed as a technical, gender-neutral set of rules, of concern to States rather than humans, authors in this volume persuasively argue that critical feminist perspectives are needed to question the underlying assumptions of ostensibly gender-neutral norms. Coming at a time when the presence of women at sea is increasing, the volume forcefully and successfully argues that legal rules are relevant to ensure gender equality and the empowerment of women at sea, in an effort to render law for the oceans more inclusive. The Conservation and Management of Shared Fish Stocks

The Conservation and Management of Shared Fish Stocks PDF Author: Gordon Ross Munro
Publisher: Food & Agriculture Org.
ISBN: 9789251051429
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 84

Book Description
The effective management of shared fish stocks stands as one of the great challenges towards achieving long-term sustainable fisheries. These resources account for as much as one-third of world marine capture fishery harvests. This paper explores the legal and economic aspects of the management of each of the several different categories of shared stocks, namely transboundary, highly migratory, straddling and discrete high seas stocks. The economics of the issue point to the conclusion that, with few exceptions, effective cooperation between and among states is a fundamental prerequisite for sustainable resource management.
