Book Description
Rama and her family, are forced to flee their once-peaceful village to escape the ravages of the civil war raging ever closer to their home With only what they can carry on their backs, Rama and her mother, father, grandfather and brother, Sami, set out to walk to freedom in Europe. This unique picture book was inspired by the stone artwork of Syrian artist Nizar Ali Badr, discovered by chance by Canadian children’s writer Margriet Ruurs. The author was immediately impressed by the strong narrative quality of Mr. Badr’s work, and, using many of Mr. Badr’s already-created pieces, she set out to create a story about the Syrian refugee crisis. Orca Book Publishers is pleased to offer this book as a dual-language (English and Arabic) edition.

Stumbling Blocks and Stepping-Stones

Stumbling Blocks and Stepping-Stones PDF Author: Duane E. Jennings
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781684180264
Category : Homosexuality
Languages : en
Pages : 842

Book Description
Stumbling Blocks and Stepping-Stones is a two-volume publication which vigorously examines Mormonism's long struggle with those it has traditionally deemed as sexually and gender transgressive -- its LGBTI members. It emboldens Latter-day Saints and fellow Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Intersex, believing or disaffected, to dialogue with one another and consider the very real possibility of their full acceptance within the beloved faith community. It makes five enormous contributions: (1)It analyzes the "clobber scriptures" -- those most frequently used to end conversations on the topic -- drawing on a broad spectrum of Jewish, Christian, and academic scholars. The book provides connatural context and reasonable interpretations that broaden the discussion beyond "because God said so."(2)It provides a stimulating overview of scientific research on homosexuality in nature (severely undercutting the "homosexuality isn't natural" argument), what's currently known about the causes/influence on homosexuality, and the history of homophobia that has brought us to our current position. (3)It argues, persuasively, in my opinion, for ways in which the gospel can and does (and the church could and should) include lgbti members in full fellowship. (4)The longest section--part 4--provides a history of interactions between the church and its lgbti members. Because of my love for history, this is my favorite section, even though a lot of it seems like "baby step forward, giant step backwards," especially now. (5)The tone models a combination of compassion, serious scholarship, and firmly founded discipleship that should be elements that govern how the dialogue can and should be conducted.

Stepping-Stones

Category : Art

Book Description
“The next best thing to actually seeing the prehistoric cave art of southern Franc[e] . . . A rapturous guide through five major Ice Age sites” (Archaeology). The cave art of France’s Dordogne region is world-famous for the mythology and beauty of its remarkable drawings and paintings. These ancient images of lively bison, horses, and mammoths, as well as symbols of all kinds, are fascinating touchstones in the development of human culture, demonstrating how far humankind has come and reminding us of the ties that bind us across the ages. Over more than twenty-five years of teaching and research, Christine Desdemaines-Hugon has become an unrivaled expert in the cave art and artists of the Dordogne region. In Stepping-Stones she combines her expertise in both art and archaeology to convey an intimate understanding of the “cave experience.” Her keen insights communicate not only the incomparable artistic value of these works but also the near-spiritual impact of viewing them for oneself. Focusing on five fascinating sites, including the famed Font de Gaume and others that still remain open to the public, this book reveals striking similarities between art forms of the Paleolithic and works of modern artists and gives us a unique pathway toward understanding the culture of the Dordogne Paleolithic peoples and how it still touches our lives today. “Her vivid descriptions help readers visualize the Cro-Magnon man or woman painting the beautiful bison, horses, mammoths, and other symbols. [A] fine reading experience.” —Library Journal

Living Stones of Steppingstones

Living Stones of Steppingstones PDF Author: Fiona Stevenson
Publisher: Lulu.com
ISBN: 1291165428
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 275

Book Description
Fiction. Short stories of members, young and old, belonging to a church community during a period of approximatley thirty years. This is not a history of the church. Nor is it biographical, although several of the stories relate to the same people at different stages or ages of life. In Scripture, the Apostle Peter states: "Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house.." (1 Peter 2:4). These are the 'Living Stones' of the stories: precious tiny gems that sparkle between the larger blocks that make up the walls and support the roof; the various colours and shapes of the precious and semi-precious stones that make the building welcoming and gracious. They are stories of the quarrying, the shaping and the cleaning, and the fitting them in place. We meet them in their homes and in their church home, visit with them and bid them farewell. My prayer is that you will enjoy your visit and that you will find your place as a lively stone in the fabric of the church, growing in grace. God bless you.
