Book Description
One of the greatest challenges for nuclear energy is how to properly manage the highly radioactive waste generated during irradiation in nuclear reactors. Accelerator Driven Systems (ADSs) may offer new prospects and advantages for the transmutation of such high level nuclear waste. ADS or accelerator driven transmutation of waste (ATW) consists of a high power proton accelerator, a heavy metal spallation target that produces neutrons when bombarded by the high power beam, and a sub-critical core that is neutronically coupled to the spallation target. This publication provides a comprehensive state of the art of the ADS technology by representing the different ADS concepts proposed worldwide in the last 15 years, as well as the related R&D activities and demonstration initiatives carried out at national international level.

Book Description
"The objective of this status report is threefold. Firstly, it aims to review the state of the art of this technology by presenting the different ADS concepts proposed worldwide since 2000, as well as the related R & D activities and demonstration initiatives carried out at national and international levels. Secondly, it contributes to establishing an international roadmap up to the full deployment of ADS, in the context of advanced nuclear fuel cycles. Thirdly, it helps to identify and possibly to stimulate important directions of national and international efforts in this area. The IAEA would like to express its appreciation to D. De Bruyn, who chaired this study. The IAEA is grateful to all those who helped in the preparation of this report, which benefited from contributions from Belarus, Belgium, China, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, the Republic of Korea, the Netherlands, the Russian Federation, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United States of America. The IAEA officer responsible for this publication was S. Monti of the Division of Nuclear Power."--Foreword.

Reviews Of Accelerator Science And Technology - Volume 8: Accelerator Applications In Energy And Security

Reviews Of Accelerator Science And Technology - Volume 8: Accelerator Applications In Energy And Security PDF Author: Alexander Wu Chao
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9813108916
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 299

Book Description
As accelerator science and technology progressed over the past several decades, the accelerators themselves have undergone major improvements in multiple performance factors: beam energy, beam power, and beam brightness. As a consequence, accelerators have found applications in a wide range of fields in our life and in our society. The current volume is dedicated to applications in energy and security, two of the most important and urgent topics in today's world. This volume makes an effort to provide a review as complete and up to date as possible of this broad and challenging subject. It contains overviews on each of the two topics and a series of articles for in-depth discussions including heavy ion accelerator driven inertial fusion, linear accelerator-based ADS systems, circular accelerator-based ADS systems, accelerator-reactor interface, accelerators for fusion material testing, cargo inspection, proton radiography, compact neutron generators and detectors. It also has a review article on accelerator science and technology in Canada with a focus on the TRIUMF laboratory, and an article on the life of Bruno Touschek, a renowned accelerator physicist.

Status of Fast Reactor Research and Technology Development

Status of Fast Reactor Research and Technology Development PDF Author: International Atomic Energy Agency
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781523130191
Category : Fast reactors
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
"Based on a recommendation from the Technical Working Group on Fast Reactors, this publication is a regular update of previous publications on fast reactor technology. The publication provides comprehensive and detailed information on the technology of fast neutron reactors. The focus is on practical issues that are useful to engineers, scientists, managers, university students and professors. The main issues of discussion are experience in design, construction, operation and decommissioning, various areas of research and development, engineering, safety and national strategies, and public acceptance of fast reactors. In the summary the reader will find national strategies, international initiatives on innovative (i.e. Generation IV) systems and an assessment of public acceptance as related to fast reactors."--Résumé de l'éditeur.

Radiation Safety of Accelerator Based Radioisotope Production Facilities

Radiation Safety of Accelerator Based Radioisotope Production Facilities PDF Author: IAEA
Publisher: International Atomic Energy Agency
ISBN: 9201057229
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 102

Book Description
Radioisotopes are used worldwide in a range of medical, industrial, research and academic applications. A large proportion of these radioisotopes are produced in particle accelerators, and the number of institutions that operate linear accelerators or cyclotrons and manufacture and distribute radiopharmaceuticals, for example, is significant and increasing. The production of radioisotopes using particle accelerators poses significant radiation hazards to workers, members of the public, and the environment when accelerators are operated without adequate radiation safety measures. This Safety Guide provides practical guidance for implementing radiation protection and safety measures in such facilities involved in the production and use of radioisotopes.

Accelerator-Driven System at Kyoto University Critical Assembly

Accelerator-Driven System at Kyoto University Critical Assembly PDF Author: Cheol Ho Pyeon
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 9789811603433
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 352

Book Description
This open access book is a unique compilation of experimental benchmark analyses of the accelerator-driven system (ADS) at the Kyoto University Critical Assembly (KUCA) on the most recent advances in the development of computational methods. It is devoted especially to nuclear engineers and scientists. Readers will find a detailed description of advanced measurement techniques and calculation methodologies for the ADS with 14 MeV neutrons and high-energy neutrons (with combined use of 100 MeV protons and Pb-Bi target) at KUCA. Additionally, experimental results of nuclear transmutation of minor actinides by ADS and at a critical state are included. Readers also have access to benchmarks of specific ADS experiments with raw data in the Appendix. The book is a valuable resource for the ADS experiments at KUCA which are globally recognized as both static and kinetic studies from the point of view of fundamental research.
