Staging Frontiers

Staging Frontiers PDF Author: William Garrett Acree
Publisher: University of New Mexico Press
ISBN: 0826361064
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 297

Book Description
Swashbuckling tales of valiant gauchos roaming Argentina and Uruguay were nineteenth-century Latin American bestsellers. But when the stories jumped from the page to the circus stage and beyond, their cultural, economic, and political influence revolutionized popular culture and daily life. In this expansive and engaging narrative William Acree guides readers through the deep history of popular entertainment before turning to circus culture and rural dramas that celebrated the countryside on stage. More than just riveting social experiences, these dramas were among the region’s most dominant attractions on the eve of the twentieth century. Staging Frontiers further explores the profound impacts this phenomenon had on the ways people interacted and on the broader culture that influenced the region. This new, modern popular culture revolved around entertainment and related products, yet it was also central to making sense of social class, ethnic identity, and race as demographic and economic transformations were reshaping everyday experiences in this rapidly urbanizing region.

Multimodal Neuroimaging Computing for the Characterization of Neurodegenerative Disorders

Multimodal Neuroimaging Computing for the Characterization of Neurodegenerative Disorders PDF Author: Sidong Liu
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 9811035334
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 153

Book Description
This thesis covers various facets of brain image computing methods and illustrates the scientific understanding of neurodegenerative disorders based on four general aspects of multimodal neuroimaging computing: neuroimaging data pre-processing, brain feature modeling, pathological pattern analysis, and translational model development. It demonstrates how multimodal neuroimaging computing techniques can be integrated and applied to neurodegenerative disease research and management, highlighting relevant examples and case studies. Readers will also discover a number of interesting extension topics in longitudinal neuroimaging studies, subject-centered analysis, and the brain connectome. As such, the book will benefit all health informatics postgraduates, neuroscience researchers, neurology and psychiatry practitioners, and policymakers who are interested in medical image computing and computer-assisted interventions. “br>

The Comic Book Western

The Comic Book Western PDF Author: Christopher Conway
Publisher: U of Nebraska Press
ISBN: 1496232224
Category : Comics & Graphic Novels
Languages : en
Pages : 417

Book Description
2023 Ray and Pat Browne Award for Best Edited Collection in Popular and American Culture One of the greatest untold stories about the globalization of the Western is the key role of comics. Few American cultural exports have been as successful globally as the Western, a phenomenon commonly attributed to the widespread circulation of fiction, film, and television. The Comic Book Western centers comics in the Western's international success. Even as readers consumed translations of American comic book Westerns, they fell in love with local ones that became national or international sensations. These essays reveal the unexpected cross-pollinations that allowed the Western to emerge from and speak to a wide range of historical and cultural contexts, including Spanish and Italian fascism, Polish historical memory, the ideology of shōjo manga from Japan, British post-apocalypticism and the gothic, race and identity in Canada, Mexican gender politics, French critiques of manifest destiny, and gaucho nationalism in Argentina. The vibrant themes uncovered in The Comic Book Western teach us that international comic book Westerns are not hollow imitations but complex and aesthetically powerful statements about identity, culture, and politics.

Sensor-Based Sleep Stage Classification Using Deep Learning

Sensor-Based Sleep Stage Classification Using Deep Learning PDF Author: Xinyu Huang
Publisher: Logos Verlag Berlin GmbH
ISBN: 3832556176
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 173

Book Description
Sleep is a cyclic physiological phenomenon, an important aspect of human life activity, which, like sport and diet, is a nutritional element that ensures the growth and development of the organism. Under the influence of various factors such as work and study stress and metabolic disorders, more and more people suffer from various types of sleep disorders. Sleep has become an important research topic in recent years. Sleep stage analysis plays an important role in the early detection and treatment of sleep disorders. However, different age groups show different symptoms of sleep disorders, and different sleep disorders show variability in their different sleep stages. The prevalence of sleep disorders is much higher in children than in adults. Although the classification of sleep stages in adults has been well studied, children show markedly different characteristics of sleep stages. Therefore, there is an urgent need for sleep stage classification in children. With the rapid development of intelligent computing technology, artificial intelligence has found wide application in medical research and health sciences in recent years. In the field of sleep medicine, deep learning approaches can efficiently and automatically learn abstracted relevant sleep features from collected sleep data to accurately interpret children's sleep stages accordingly. Compared to traditional sleep data analysis, this saves many manual and time resources for data annotation and helps sleep experts reduce the risk of misdiagnosing sleep disorders based on their prior knowledge. In this context, this book presents several advanced deep learning-based approaches for sleep stage classification in children using time series polysomnography recordings acquired from clinical sensor devices. Significantly improved performance in classifying sleep stages in children suffering from sleep disorders demonstrates the great potential of joint research and development between artificial intelligence and the field of sleep medicine.

Staging Postcommunism

Staging Postcommunism PDF Author: Vessela S. Warner
Publisher: University of Iowa Press
ISBN: 1609386779
Category : Performing Arts
Languages : en
Pages : 295

Book Description
Theatre in Eastern and Central Europe was never the same after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. In the transition to a postcommunist world, “alternative theatre” found ways to grapple with political chaos, corruption, and aggressive implementation of a market economy. Three decades later, this volume is the first comprehensive examination of alternative theatre in ten former communist countries. The essays focus on companies and artists that radically changed the language and organization of theatre in the countries formerly known as the Eastern European bloc. This collection investigates the ways in which postcommunist alternative theatre negotiated and embodied change not only locally but globally as well. Contributors: Dennis Barnett, Dennis C. Beck, Violeta Decheva, Luule Epner, John Freedman, Barry Freeman, Margarita Kompelmakher, Jaak Rahesoo, Angelina Ros ̧ca, Ban ̧uta Rubess, Christopher Silsby, Andrea Tompa, S. E. Wilmer
