Render Unto Rome

Render Unto Rome PDF Author: Jason Berry
Publisher: Crown
ISBN: 0385531346

Pages : 434

Book Description
AN INVESTIGATION OF EPIC FINANCIAL INTRIGUE, RENDER UNTO ROME EXPOSES THE SECRECY AND DECEIT THAT RUN COUNTER TO THE VALUES OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH. The Sunday collection in every Catholic church throughout the world is as familiar a part of the Mass as the homily and even Communion. There is no doubt that historically the Catholic Church has been one of the great engines of charity in history. But once a dollar is dropped in that basket, where does it go? How are weekly cash contributions that can amount to tens of thousands of dollars accounted for? Where does the money go when a diocese sells a church property for tens of millions of dollars? And what happens when hundreds of millions of dollars are turned over to officials at the highest ranks, no questions asked, for their discretionary use? The Roman Catholic Church is the largest organization in the world. The Vatican has never revealed its net worth, but the value of its works of art, great churches, property in Rome, and stocks held through its bank easily run into the tens of billions. Yet the Holy See as a sovereign state covers a mere 108 acres and has a small annual budget of about $280 million. No major book has examined the church’s financial underpinnings and practices with such journalistic force. Today the church bears scrutiny by virtue of the vast amounts of money (nearly $2 billion in the United States alone) paid out to victims of clergy abuse. Amid mounting diocesan bankruptcies, bishops have been selling off whole pieces of the infrastructure—churches, schools, commercial properties—while the nephew of one of the Vatican’s most powerful cardinals engaged in a lucrative scheme to profiteer off the enormous downsizing of American church wealth.

Shenandoah

Shenandoah PDF Author: Anne Chaikowsky La Voie
Publisher: Arcadia Publishing
ISBN: 1439658633
Category : Photography
Languages : en
Pages : 128

Book Description
From a distance, Shenandoah may look like any other small town, quaint and unassuming, and yet in one square mile, there are more treasures than the "black diamonds" of coal that run in her veins. Discovery of the Mammoth Vein of anthracite in the 1860s brought tens of thousands of immigrants to work the local mines; in turn, they brought their cultures and dreams of a better life in America. Within a generation, rapidly increasing population created the "Most Congested Square Mile in the United States." Later, a shift from coal mine to Main Street fashioned recognition for retail fineries, along with distinction as the "City of Churches." At the center of the Molly Maguire troubles of the 1870s and the 1902 coal strike that changed the power of the presidency, Shenandoah has long been recognized for defiance and determination. Mining disasters, financial adversity, and ruinous fires scarred memories of decades of prominence; however, Shenandoah's spirit has endured through the last 150 years.

Ethnic Organizational Dynamics

Ethnic Organizational Dynamics PDF Author: Henry Radecki
Publisher: Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press
ISBN: 0889206392
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 296

Book Description
How is the culture of an immigrant group kept alive in a new country? Voluntary organizations play a significant role, according to the author, in preserving the cultural heritage of Poland for Polish immigrants and their descendants in Canada. However, participation in these organizations is declining. The author explains why in this sociological study. The first part of the study describes Polish organizations in Canada between 1860 and 1973. The second part describes field research carried out in Metropolitan Toronto in 1974. Results of the research indicate that Polish organizations continue to contribute to the maintenance of a distinctive Polish culture, but that the long-term survival of these organizations is not assured. The study will be useful to sociologists, students of Polish culture, and those interested in ethnic organizations in general.
