Exploiting Hidden Structure in Matrix Computations: Algorithms and Applications

Exploiting Hidden Structure in Matrix Computations: Algorithms and Applications PDF Author: Michele Benzi
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319498878
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 413

Book Description
Focusing on special matrices and matrices which are in some sense `near’ to structured matrices, this volume covers a broad range of topics of current interest in numerical linear algebra. Exploitation of these less obvious structural properties can be of great importance in the design of efficient numerical methods, for example algorithms for matrices with low-rank block structure, matrices with decay, and structured tensor computations. Applications range from quantum chemistry to queuing theory. Structured matrices arise frequently in applications. Examples include banded and sparse matrices, Toeplitz-type matrices, and matrices with semi-separable or quasi-separable structure, as well as Hamiltonian and symplectic matrices. The associated literature is enormous, and many efficient algorithms have been developed for solving problems involving such matrices. The text arose from a C.I.M.E. course held in Cetraro (Italy) in June 2015 which aimed to present this fast growing field to young researchers, exploiting the expertise of five leading lecturers with different theoretical and application perspectives.

Matrix Methods: Theory, Algorithms And Applications - Dedicated To The Memory Of Gene Golub

Matrix Methods: Theory, Algorithms And Applications - Dedicated To The Memory Of Gene Golub PDF Author: Vadim Olshevsky
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9814469556
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 604

Book Description
Compared to other books devoted to matrices, this volume is unique in covering the whole of a triptych consisting of algebraic theory, algorithmic problems and numerical applications, all united by the essential use and urge for development of matrix methods. This was the spirit of the 2nd International Conference on Matrix Methods and Operator Equations from 23-27 July 2007 in Moscow that was organized by Dario Bini, Gene Golub, Alexander Guterman, Vadim Olshevsky, Stefano Serra-Capizzano, Gilbert Strang and Eugene Tyrtyshnikov.Matrix methods provide the key to many problems in pure and applied mathematics. However, linear algebra theory, numerical algorithms and matrices in FEM/BEM applications usually live as if in three separate worlds. In this volume, maybe for the first time ever, they are compiled together as one entity as it was at the Moscow meeting, where the algebraic part was impersonated by Hans Schneider, algorithms by Gene Golub, and applications by Guri Marchuk. All topics intervened in plenary sessions are specially categorized into three sections of this volume. The soul of the meeting was Gene Golub, who rendered a charming “Golub's dimension” to the three main axes of the conference topics. This volume is dedicated in gratitude to his memory.

Book Description
Algorithms and Theory of Computation Handbook, Second Edition in a two volume set, provides an up-to-date compendium of fundamental computer science topics and techniques. It also illustrates how the topics and techniques come together to deliver efficient solutions to important practical problems. New to the Second Edition: Along with updating and revising many of the existing chapters, this second edition contains more than 20 new chapters. This edition now covers external memory, parameterized, self-stabilizing, and pricing algorithms as well as the theories of algorithmic coding, privacy and anonymity, databases, computational games, and communication networks. It also discusses computational topology, computational number theory, natural language processing, and grid computing and explores applications in intensity-modulated radiation therapy, voting, DNA research, systems biology, and financial derivatives. This best-selling handbook continues to help computer professionals and engineers find significant information on various algorithmic topics. The expert contributors clearly define the terminology, present basic results and techniques, and offer a number of current references to the in-depth literature. They also provide a glimpse of the major research issues concerning the relevant topics

Algorithms for Quadratic Matrix and Vector Equations

Algorithms for Quadratic Matrix and Vector Equations PDF Author: Federico Poloni
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 8876423842
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 241

Book Description
This book is devoted to studying algorithms for the solution of a class of quadratic matrix and vector equations. These equations appear, in different forms, in several practical applications, especially in applied probability and control theory. The equations are first presented using a novel unifying approach; then, specific numerical methods are presented for the cases most relevant for applications, and new algorithms and theoretical results developed by the author are presented. The book focuses on “matrix multiplication-rich” iterations such as cyclic reduction and the structured doubling algorithm (SDA) and contains a variety of new research results which, as of today, are only available in articles or preprints.

Foundations Of Computational Mathematics, Proceedings Of Smalefest 2000

Foundations Of Computational Mathematics, Proceedings Of Smalefest 2000 PDF Author: Felipe Cucker
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9814489425
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 479

Book Description
This invaluable book contains 19 papers selected from those submitted to a conference held in Hong Kong in July 2000 to celebrate the 70th birthday of Professor Steve Smale. It may be regarded as a continuation of the proceedings of SMALEFEST 1990 (”From Topology to Computation”) held in Berkeley, USA, 10 years before, but with the focus on the area in which Smale worked more intensively during the '90's, namely the foundations of computational mathematics.
