Through-the-Wall Radar Imaging

Through-the-Wall Radar Imaging PDF Author: Moeness G. Amin
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1439814775
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 604

Book Description
Through-the-wall radar imaging (TWRI) allows police, fire and rescue personnel, first responders, and defense forces to detect, identify, classify, and track the whereabouts of humans and moving objects. Electromagnetic waves are considered the most effective at achieving this objective, yet advances in this multi-faceted and multi-disciplinary technology require taking phenomenological issues into consideration and must be based on a solid understanding of the intricacies of EM wave interactions with interior and exterior objects and structures. Providing a broad overview of the myriad factors involved, namely size, weight, mobility, acquisition time, aperture distribution, power, bandwidth, standoff distance, and, most importantly, reliable performance and delivery of accurate information, Through-the-Wall Radar Imaging examines this technology from the algorithmic, modeling, experimentation, and system design perspectives. It begins with coverage of the electromagnetic properties of walls and building materials, and discusses techniques in the design of antenna elements and array configurations, beamforming concepts and issues, and the use of antenna array with collocated and distributed apertures. Detailed chapters discuss several suitable waveforms inverse scattering approaches and revolve around the relevance of physical-based model approaches in TWRI along with theoretical and experimental research in 3D building tomography using microwave remote sensing, high-frequency asymptotic modeling methods, synthetic aperture radar (SAR) techniques, impulse radars, airborne radar imaging of multi-floor buildings strategies for target detection, and detection of concealed targets. The book concludes with a discussion of how the Doppler principle can be used to measure motion at a very fine level of detail. The book provides a deep understanding of the challenges of TWRI, stressing its multidisciplinary and phenomenological nature. The breadth and depth of topics covered presents a highly detailed treatment of this potentially life-saving technology.

Book Description
Security-enriched urban computing and smart grids are areas that attracted many a- demic and industry professionals to research and develop. The goal of this conference was to bring together researchers from academia and industry as well as practitioners to share ideas, problems and solutions relating to the multifaceted aspects of urban computing and the smart grid. This conference includes the following special sessions: Signal Processing, Image Processing, Pattern Recognition and Communications (SIPC 2010), Networking, Fault-tolerance and Security For Distributed Computing Systems (NFSDCS 2010), Security Technology Application (STA 2010), Electric Transportation (ElecTrans 2010), Techniques of Bi-directional Power Computing in High Voltage Power Supply (TBPC 2010), Low Power IT and Applications (LPITA 2010), Computational Intel- gence and Soft Computing (CISC 2010), Distributed Computing and Sensor Networks (DCSN 2010), Advanced Fusion IT (AFIT 2010), Social Media and Social Netwo- ing (SMSN 2010), Software Engineering and Medical Information Engineering (SEMIE 2010), Human-Centered Advanced Research/Education (HuCARE 2010), Database Integrity and Security (DIS 2010), Ubiquitous IT Application (UITA 2010) and Smart Grid Applications (SGA 2010). We would like to express our gratitude to all of the authors of the submitted papers and to all attendees, for their contributions and participation. We believe in the need for continuing this undertaking in the future.

Sensors and Sensing in Biology and Engineering

Sensors and Sensing in Biology and Engineering PDF Author: Friedrich G. Barth
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3709160251
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 392

Book Description
Biological sensors are usually remarkably small, sensitive and efficient. It is highly desirable to design corresponding artificial sensors for scientific, industrial and commercial purposes. This book is designed to fill an urgent need for interdisciplinary exchange between biologists studying sensors in the natural world and engineers and physical scientists developing artificial sensors. The main topics cover mechanical sensors, e.g. waves and sounds, visual sensors and vision and chemosensors. Readers will obtain a fuller understanding of the nature and performance of natural sensors as well as enhanced appreciation for the current status and the potential applicability of artificial microsensors.

Wireless Sensor and Actuator Networks

Wireless Sensor and Actuator Networks PDF Author: Roberto Verdone
Publisher: Academic Press
ISBN: 0080558615
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 391

Book Description
When choosing the technology options to develop a wireless sensor network (WSN), it is vital that their performance levels can be assessed for the type of application intended. This book describes the different technology options – MAC protocols, routing protocols, localisation and data fusion techniques – and provides the means to numerically measure their performance, whether by simulation, mathematical models or experimental test beds. Case studies, based on the authors' direct experience of implementing wireless sensor networks, describe the design methodology and the type of measurements used, together with samples of the performance measurements attained. Wireless Sensor and Actuator Networks will enable you to answer vital questions such as: - How long will my network remain alive given the amount of sensing required of it? - For how long should I set the sleeping state of my motes? - How many sensors should I distribute to meet the expected requirements of the application? - What type of throughput should I expect as a function of the number of nodes deployed and the radio interface chosen (whether it be Bluetooth or Zigbee)? - How is the Packet Error Rate of my Zigbee motes affected by the selection of adjacent frequency sub bands in the ISM 2.4GHz band? - How is the localisation precision dependant on the number of nodes deployed in a corridor? Communications and signal processing engineers, researchers and graduate students working in wireless sensor networks will find this book an invaluable practical guide to this important technology. "This book gives a proper balance between theory and application; it is a book for those R&D engineers that want to appreciate both why, how and in which domains Wireless Sensor Networks can be best applied." --Fabio Bellifemine, Telecom Italia "This book is a thorough and accessible exposition on wireless sensor networks with a good balance between theory and practice; it is valuable for both students and practicing engineers, and is an essential addition for engineering libraries." --Professor Moe Win, Associate Professor at the Laboratory for Information and Decision Systems (LIDS), Massachusetts Institute of Technology - Only book to examine wireless sensor network technologies and assess their performance capabilities against possible applications - Enables the engineer to choose the technology that will give the best performance for the intended application - Case studies, based on the authors' direct experience of implementing wireless sensor networks, describe the design methodology and the type of measurements used, together with samples of the performance measurements attained
