Book Description
The late Middle Ages saw the emergence of professional jurists as a new functionary elite. The study approaches this phenomenon by focusing on a singular individual: Dietrich von Bocksdorf, Professor of Canon Law in Leipzig, learned counselor to the elector of Saxony, bishop of Naumburg. The book thereby breaks new ground. It offers not only a biography, but explores large and previously unused and largely unknown collections of more than 500 papers from the legal practice, written by the Leipzig Ordinarius. Based on this unique material the book examines for the first time spheres of influence, circles of clients and occupational fields of an individual late medieval german jurist. Legal opinions (“consilia”) and pleadings, but as well working tools for the emerging learned practice of “Common Saxon Law” made by Dietrich von Bocksdorf, provide deep insights into the beginnings of the epochal change from the traditional-archaic jurisdiction of the Middle Ages to the scholarly and written practice of law in the early modern world.

Knowledge of the Pragmatici
Author:
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 900442573X
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 396
Book Description
Knowledge of the pragmatici sheds new light on pragmatic normative literature (mainly from the religious sphere), a genre crucial for the formation of normative orders in early modern Ibero-America. Long underrated by legal historical scholarship, these media – manuals for confessors, catechisms, and moral theological literature – selected and localised normative knowledge for the colonial worlds and thus shaped the language of normativity. The eleven chapters of this book explore the circulation and the uses of pragmatic normative texts in the Iberian peninsula, in New Spain, Peru, New Granada and Brazil. The book reveals the functions and intellectual achievements of pragmatic literature, which condensed normative knowledge, drawing on medieval scholarly practices of ‘epitomisation’, and links the genre with early modern legal culture. Contributors are: Manuela Bragagnolo, Agustín Casagrande, Otto Danwerth, Thomas Duve, José Luis Egío, Renzo Honores, Gustavo César Machado Cabral, Pilar Mejía, Christoph H. F. Meyer, Osvaldo Moutin, and David Rex Galindo.

Thought Experiments in Methodological and Historical Contexts
Author:
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004201777
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 243
Book Description
During the last decades of the twentieth century highly imaginative thought experiments were introduced in philosophy: Searle’s Chinese room, variations on the Brain-in-a-vat, Thomson’s violinist. At the same time historians of philosophy and science claimed the title of thought experiment for almost any argument: Descartes’ evil genius, Buridan’s ass, Gyges’ ring. In the early 1990s a systematic debate began concerning the epistemological status of thought experiments. The essays in this volume are an outcome of this debate. They were guided by the idea that, since we cannot forge a strict definition of thought experiments, we should at least tame the contemporary wild usage of this notion by analysing thought experiments from various periods, and thus clarify how they work, what their limits are, and what their conceptualisation could be. The Sword and the Crucible
Author: Alan Williams
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004229337
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 300
Book Description
The sword was the most important of weapons, the symbol of the warrior, not to mention the badge of a officer and a gentleman. Much has been written about the artistic and historical significance of the sword, but outside specialised publications, relatively little about its metallurgy, and that often confined to a particular group. This book aims to tell the story of the making of iron and steel swords from the first Celtic examples through the Middle Ages to the Early Modern period. The results of the microscopic examination of over a hundred swords by the author and other archaeometallurgists are given and explained in terms of the materials available in Europe.

The Flower of Paradise
Author: David J. Rothenberg
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 019987557X
Category : Music
Languages : en
Pages : 283
Book Description
There is a striking similarity between Marian devotional songs and secular love songs of the late Middle Ages and Renaissance. Two disparate genres--one sacred, the other secular; one Latin, the other vernacular--both praise an idealized, impossibly virtuous woman. Each does so through highly stylized derivations of traditional medieval song forms--Marian prayer derived from earlier Gregorian chant, and love songs and lyrics from medieval courtly song. Yet despite their obvious similarities, the two musical and poetic traditions have rarely been studied together. Author David J. Rothenberg takes on this task with remarkable success, producing a useful and broad introduction to Marian music and liturgy, and then coupling that with an incisive comparative analysis of these devotional forms and the words and music of secular love songs of the period. The Flower of Paradise examines the interplay of Marian devotional and secular poetics within polyphonic music from ca. 1200 to ca. 1500. Through case studies of works that demonstrate a specific symbolic resonance between Marian devotion and secular song, the book illustrates the distinctive ethos of this period in European culture. Rothenberg makes use of an impressive command of liturgical and religious studies, literature and poetry, and art history to craft a study with wide application across disciplinary boundaries. With its broad scope and unique, incisive analysis, this book will open up new ways of thinking about the history and development of secular and sacred music and the Marian tradition for scholars, students, and anyone with an interest in medieval and Renaissance religious culture.
