Book Description
Not to be confused with Milwaukee's "South Side," the City of South Milwaukee is in fact a separate and independent community, with a rich and colorful history all its own. It is this spirit of self-sufficiency that has long been a hallmark of South Milwaukee, going back to 1835 when the area was first settled and continuing through the city's remarkable transformation from a small rural settlement to a bustling industrial suburb. Since 1892, the city has been home to Bucyrus International, one of the world's leading manufacturers of heavy excavation equipment. Bucyrus provided employment to South Milwaukee citizens, allowing the city to grow and add more businesses and city services, and to feel an even more confident sense of independence.

Growing Up Polish

Growing Up Polish PDF Author: Carol Demarco

Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 184

Book Description
Carol was born to Polish-Americans in a small blue-collar town south of Milwaukee. The book spans three generations: her immigrant grandparents at the turn of the century, her parents who grew up immersed in the Polish culture, and their three daughters who enjoyed the "happy days" of the 1940's and 50's. Nostalgic, funny, insightful, the book is lightly seasoned with Polish words, recipes, and wisdom, but you don't have to be Polish to enjoy this well-written memoir.

Illuminating the Particular

Illuminating the Particular PDF Author: Christel T. Maass
Publisher: Wisconsin Historical Society
ISBN:
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 166

Book Description
Roman B.J. Kwasniewski, son of Polish immigrants, used his camera to document life in Milwaukee's Polish community during the early decades of the twentieth century. His images transform the particulars of everyday life at local businesses, in homes and classrooms, and at cultural, social, and recreational events into powerful depictions of the immigrant experience. With an introduction by well-known Milwaukee historian John Gurda, this book offers rare insight into the daily lives of a proud people struggling to maintain their heritage while living in a time of rapid change. While Kwasniewski's camera captured the sights and sounds of Milwaukee at the turn of the century from the perspective of a single ethnic group in a single neighborhood, his photographs resonate far beyond Milwaukee's Polish South Side. They illuminate the particulars of American life during the early decades of the twentieth century. "What we see, reflected in the distant mirror," says John Gurda, "is ourselves."

Drainage Area Data for Wisconsin Streams

Drainage Area Data for Wisconsin Streams PDF Author: E. W. Henrich
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Drainage
Languages : en
Pages : 330

Book Description
Drainage areas were determined for more than 7,000 sites in Wisconsin's 11 major river basins, including all named streams draining 5 or more square miles, and all unnamed streams draining 10 or more square miles. Also determined are drainage areas for gaging stations, sewage-treatment plants, dams, major highway crossings, and other sites where discharge measurements or water-quality data are available. Drainage areas were delineated on U.S. Geological Survey topographic maps. Drainage areas are shown in tabular form under six headings: station number; stream name, rank, and location; township, range, and section; county; type of site; and drainage area. Eleven major-river-basin maps show the location and station number of key sites.
