Lake Jocassee

Lake Jocassee PDF Author: Debbie Fletcher
Publisher: Arcadia Publishing
ISBN: 1467111090
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 128

Book Description
The creation of Lake Jocassee by Duke Power Company's massive Keowee-Toxaway Project in the late 1960s and early 1970s flooded a quaint mountain valley whose earliest recorded history was in 1539, when Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto led an expedition through the present-day Jocassee Gorges. In 1971, hundreds watched the slow retreat of the Whitewater, Thompson, Horsepasture, Toxaway, and Keowee Rivers as they formed one large lake, smothering homes, lands, and farms in the process. Years of monitoring the water flow through the valley proved initial estimates correct, and Lake Jocassee became the deepwater source it was intended to be, providing an adequate supply of water to generate electricity. Today, a new generation enjoys many recreational activities on what is known as the "Jewel in South Carolina's Crown," a pristine lake surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains in Oconee and Pickens Counties.

Lake and Reservoir Restoration

Lake and Reservoir Restoration PDF Author: G. Dennis Cooke
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 1483163253
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 401

Book Description
Lake and Reservoir Restoration deals with the eutrophication process and the methods to protect, restore, and manage lakes and reservoirs. The most common in-lake techniques or procedures, plus nutrient diversion, are reviewed with regard to their scientific basis, methods of application, known effectiveness, feasibility, drawbacks, and costs. Areas for further research and development are also highlighted. This book is comprised of 16 chapters organized into four sections. After an introduction to the theory of the problem and the restoration technique, the discussion turns to the various restoration methods such as those used for physical and chemical control of nutrients. Diversion and advanced waste treatment, hypolimnetic withdrawal, and dilution and flushing are considered along with phosphorus precipitation and inactivation, sediment oxidation, sediment removal, and hypolimnetic aeration. Case studies and success stories are presented and the costs and potential negative impacts of the methods are examined. The following chapters focus on methods to control plant biomass, including artificial circulation, water-level drawdown, harvesting, biological control, and surface and sediment covers. A chapter on liming acidified lakes concludes this text. This monograph will be useful to professional limnologists and engineers, on-site lake or reservoir managers, and those who are interested in learning about the problems and management of lakes and reservoirs.

Whippoorwill Farewell

Whippoorwill Farewell PDF Author: Debbie Fletcher
Publisher: Trafford on Demand Pub
ISBN: 9781412005210
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 202

Book Description
Jocassee Valley, peacefully tucked in the arms of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Oconee County, was finally laid to rest in 1973. Duke Power Company's multi-million dollar Keowee-Toxaway project abruptly choked the natural flow of four wild rivers: Whitewater, Toxaway, Horsepasture, and Keowee, inundating the Valley under a chilling shroud, in some places over 300 feet deep. The idyllic sights and sounds of Jocassee are forever lost...except in the hearts of those of us who lived and played there. So, let's get to the bottom of it--Lake Jocassee, that is. Inside these covers are rare--perhaps one-of-a-kind--photographs of this beautiful Valley. Some were taken as early as 1914, long before dynamite carved out its cruel facade. Whippoorwill Farewell: Jocassee Remembered is my collection of childhood and family memories and rare photographs which I hope will make you laugh--perhaps cry--as you take a trip back through your own memories and remember the family times that warm your heart. The word "remember" means "to put back together; to re-member." It is my hope that in these pages... Jocassee will be remembered.
