The Sonnets of Michael Angelo Buonarroti and Tommaso Campanella
Author: John Addington Symonds

ISBN: 9781499506921
Category : Poetry

Pages : 150
Book Description
The sonnets of Michelangelo and Campanella in rhymed English, by UK translator JOHN ADDINGTON SYMONDS. New 2014 Edition. Mask Press Oxford. John Addington Symonds (5 October 1840 - 19 April 1893) was an English poet and literary critic. A cultural historian, he was known for his work on the Renaissance, as well as numerous biographies about writers and artists. He also wrote much poetry inspired by homosexual love. Symonds's complete translation of Michelangelo's sonnets in 1878 was the first in English and the first based on the accurate 1863 Gausti text, which corrected Michelangelo the Younger's heterosexualizing of the poems in his 1623 edition. In this poetry anthology, published in 1887, he combined the sonnets of Tommaso Campanella and Michelangelo. "It is with diffidence that I offer a translation of Michael Angelo's sonnets, for the first time completely rendered into English rhyme, and that I venture on a version of Campanella's philosophical poems. My excuse, if I can plead any for so bold an attempt, may be found in this-that, so far as I am aware, no other English writer has dealt with Michael Angelo's verses since the publication of his autograph; while Campanella's sonnets have hitherto been almost utterly unknown. Something must be said to justify the issue of poems so dissimilar in a single volume. Michael Angelo and Campanella represent widely sundered, though almost contemporaneous, moments in the evolution of the Italian genius. Michael Angelo was essentially an artist, living in the prime of the Renaissance. Campanella was a philosopher, born when the Counter-Reformation was doing all it could to blight the free thought of the sixteenth century; and when the modern spirit of exact enquiry, in a few philosophical martyrs, was opening a new stage for European science."

ISBN: 0316353787
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 556
Book Description
Michelangelo's Notebooks is an intimate celebration of the artist's sketches, architectural drawings, letters, and love poems. Michelangelo Buonarroti is considered to be one of the greatest artists of the sixteenth century, not only in painting but in writing and poetry as well. He filled hundreds of sheets of paper with exquisite drawings, many of which would eventually become some of the most celebrated masterpieces of all time, and he wrote over 300 poems and sonnets on admiration and spirituality. Organized chronologically, Michelangelo's Notebooks is an illustrated record of the artist's life and work, and combines the artists's own words with his sketches and finished compositions. His letters about the Sistine Chapel and Pope Julius, for example, are illustrated with sketches that he produced while he was writing. Edited and curated by Carolyn Vaughan, former editor at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, she provides fascinating commentary and insights into the material presented throughout the book.

Secrets of Creativity
Author: Suzanne Nalbantian
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0190462337
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 384
Book Description
Secrets of Creativity: What Neuroscience, the Arts, and Our Minds Reveal draws on insights from leading neuroscientists and scholars in the humanities and the arts to probe creativity in its many contexts, in the everyday mind, the exceptional mind, the scientific mind, the artistic mind, and the pathological mind. Components of creativity are specified with respect to types of memory, forms of intelligence, modes of experience, and kinds of emotion. Authors in this volume take on the challenge of showing how creativity can be characterized behaviorally, cognitively, and neurophysiologically. The complementary perspectives of the authors add to the richness of these findings. Neuroscientists describe the functioning of the brain and its circuitry in creative acts of scientific discovery or aesthetic production. Humanists from the fields of literature, art, and music give analyses of creativity in major literary works, musical compositions, and works of visual art.
