The Theory and Applications of Statistical Interference Functions
Author: D.L. McLeish
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461238722
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 131
Book Description
This monograph arose out of a desire to develop an approach to statistical infer ence that would be both comprehensive in its treatment of statistical principles and sufficiently powerful to be applicable to a variety of important practical problems. In the latter category, the problems of inference for stochastic processes (which arise com monly in engineering and biological applications) come to mind. Classes of estimating functions seem to be promising in this respect. The monograph examines some of the consequences of extending standard concepts of ancillarity, sufficiency and complete ness into this setting. The reader should note that the development is mathematically "mature" in its use of Hilbert space methods but not, we believe, mathematically difficult. This is in keeping with our desire to construct a theory that is rich in statistical tools for infer ence without the difficulties found in modern developments, such as likelihood analysis of stochastic processes or higher order methods, to name but two. The fundamental notions of orthogonality and projection are accessible to a good undergraduate or beginning graduate student. We hope that the monograph will serve the purpose of enriching the methods available to statisticians of various interests.

Statistics in Action
Author: Jerald F. Lawless
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1482236230
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 386
Book Description
Commissioned by the Statistical Society of Canada (SSC), Statistics in Action: A Canadian Outlook helps both general readers and users of statistics better appreciate the scope and importance of statistics. It presents the ways in which statistics is used while highlighting key contributions that Canadian statisticians are making to science, technology, business, government, and other areas. The book emphasizes the role and impact of computing in statistical modeling and analysis, including the issues involved with the huge amounts of data being generated by automated processes. The first two chapters review the development of statistics as a discipline in Canada and describe some major contributions to survey methodology made by Statistics Canada, one of the world’s premier official statistics agencies. The book next discusses how statistical methodologies, such as functional data analysis and the Metropolis algorithm, are applied in a wide variety of fields, including risk management and genetics. It then focuses on the application of statistical methods in medicine and public health as well as finance and e-commerce. The remainder of the book addresses how statistics is used to study critical scientific areas, including difficult-to-access populations, endangered species, climate change, and agricultural forecasts. About the SSC Founded in Montréal in 1972, the SSC is the main professional organization for statisticians and related professionals in Canada. Its mission is to promote the use and development of statistics and probability. The SSC publishes the bilingual quarterly newsletter SSC Liaison and the peer-reviewed scientific journal The Canadian Journal of Statistics. More information can be found at www.ssc.ca.

The Application of the Statistical Theory of Extreme Values to Gust-load Problems
Author: Harry Press
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Aeronautics
Languages : en
Pages : 50
Book Description
This paper contains an analysis of the applicability of the statistical theory of extreme values to the problems of predicting the frequency of encountering the larger gust loads and velocities in flight through rough air. The results indicate that the distribution of maximum values of gust loads and velocities, under both test conditions and in normal commercial transport operations, may be represented by a simple analytic form. Methods of application and methods of measuring the reliability of the estimates are also given.

Approximate Distributions of Order Statistics
Author: Rolf-Dieter Reiss
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461396204
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 363
Book Description
This book is designed as a unified and mathematically rigorous treatment of some recent developments of the asymptotic distribution theory of order statistics (including the extreme order statistics) that are relevant for statistical theory and its applications. Particular emphasis is placed on results concern ing the accuracy oflimit theorems, on higher order approximations, and other approximations in quite a general sense. Contrary to the classical limit theorems that primarily concern the weak convergence of distribution functions, our main results will be formulated in terms of the variational and the Hellinger distance. These results will form the proper springboard for the investigation of parametric approximations of nonparametric models of joint distributions of order statistics. The approxi mating models include normal as well as extreme value models. Several applications will show the usefulness of this approach. Other recent developments in statistics like nonparametric curve estima tion and the bootstrap method will be studied as far as order statistics are concerned. 1n connection with this, graphical methods will, to some extent, be explored.
