Book Description
For the diallel crossing system involving p(p-1)/2 possible crosses among p lines, the linear yield equation, the estimated effects, the sums of squares in the analysis of variance, and the expected values for the various sums of squares under different models are described. A number of different definitions or models are given for both fixed and random genetic effects. Under these descriptions, it is shown how to obtain the several published forms of the ex pectations for the sums of squares among the estimated combining ability effects for the ith line. Thus, all published forms are correct, but different models or definitions were utilized to obtain each form. The specific combining ability variance for the ith line is redefined in such a manner as to make the genotypic variance in the absence of epistatic effects, equal to twice the sum of the general combining ability variance (additive variance the square of sigma sub alpha) and the specific combining ability vari ance (non-additive variance the square of sigma sub alpha). The currently used definition of specific combining ability variance requires that the genotypic variance be 2 the square of sigma sub alpha the square of sigma sub alpha rather than the redefined form of 2(the square of sigma sub alpha the square of sigma sub alpha) as suggested herein. Advances in Plant Breeding Strategies: Industrial and Food Crops

Advances in Plant Breeding Strategies: Industrial and Food Crops PDF Author: Jameel M. Al-Khayri
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3030232654
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 744

Book Description
This book examines the development of innovative modern methodologies towards augmenting conventional plant breeding, in individual crops, for the production of new crop varieties under the increasingly limiting environmental and cultivation factors to achieve sustainable agricultural production, enhanced food security, in addition to providing raw materials for innovative industrial products and pharmaceuticals. This is Vol 6, subtitled Industrial and Food Crops, which consists of two parts. Included in Part I are 11 industrial plant species utilized as sources of raw materials for the production of industrial products including pulp and wood crops (acacia), fiber (cotton, jute and ramie), rubber (guayule and rubber tree), oil (jojoba and flax), biofuels and pharmaceutical (agave) and sugar source (sugarcane). Part II covers 7 food plants selected for their utilization in food industries for the production of chocolate (cacao), cooking oil (oil palm, safflower, sesame and sunflower) and natural flavors and aroma (saffron and vanilla). This volume is contributed by 60 internationally reputable scientists from 14 countries. Each chapter comprehensively reviews the modern literature on the subject and reflects the authors own experience.

Heterosis and Hybrid Rice Breeding

Heterosis and Hybrid Rice Breeding PDF Author: Sant Singh Virmani
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642851150
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 199

Book Description
Rice is the most important food crop of the developing world and the demand for it is growing. Provided here is a concise account of hybrid breeding in rice, a newly deployed breeding approach to increase the yield. Research on heterosis, male sterility systems, outcrossing mechanisms, disease/insect management, and grain quality considerations in hybrid rice are reviewed. The book contains a wealth of useful information for practicing hybrid rice breeders, seed producers, researchers, and students of plant breeding.
