Solid State Theory

Solid State Theory PDF Author: Ulrich Rössler
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3662099403
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 356

Book Description
"Solid-State Theory - An Introduction" is a textbook for graduate students of physics and material sciences. Whilst covering the traditional topics of older textbooks, it also takes up new developments in theoretical concepts and materials that are connected with such breakthroughs as the quantum-Hall effects, the high-Tc superconductors, and the low-dimensional systems realized in solids. Thus besides providing the fundamental concepts to describe the physics of the electrons and ions comprising the solid, including their interactions, the book casts a bridge to the experimental facts and gives the reader an excellent insight into current research fields. A compilation of problems makes the book especially valuable to both students and teachers.

Molecular Solid State Physics

Molecular Solid State Physics PDF Author: George G. Hall
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642844618
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 161

Book Description
This book originated from a course which I developed for the Master's degree course in Molecular Engineering in Kyoto University. Most of the students had degrees in Chemistry and a limited experience of Physics and Mathematics. Since research in Molecular Engineering requires knowledge of some applications of solid state physics which are not treated in conventional physics texts it was necessary to devise a course which would build on their chemical background and enable them to read the contemporary literature of relevance to their research. I hope that this book will be found useful as a text for other advanced courses on material science for chemists. Molecular Engineering is concerned with the design and construction, at the molecular level, of materials which can fulfil specific functions. Thus the study of the forces between molecules and the influence of molecular shapes and electrostatic features on molecular properties are important. The mechanisms whereby, in the solid state, these produce cooperative effects, catalytic effects and abnormal electrical effects must be understood, at least qualitatively. The aim of this book has been to give insight into the mechanisms whereby molecules influence one another when they are close together.

Solid State Properties

Solid State Properties PDF Author: Mildred Dresselhaus
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3662559226
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 521

Book Description
This book fills a gap between many of the basic solid state physics and materials sciencebooks that are currently available. It is written for a mixed audience of electricalengineering and applied physics students who have some knowledge of elementaryundergraduate quantum mechanics and statistical mechanics. This book, based on asuccessful course taught at MIT, is divided pedagogically into three parts: (I) ElectronicStructure, (II) Transport Properties, and (III) Optical Properties. Each topic is explainedin the context of bulk materials and then extended to low-dimensional materials whereapplicable. Problem sets review the content of each chapter to help students to understandthe material described in each of the chapters more deeply and to prepare them to masterthe next chapters.

Solid State Electrochemistry I

Solid State Electrochemistry I PDF Author: Vladislav V. Kharton
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 3527627871
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 527

Book Description
The only comprehensive handbook on this important and rapidly developing topic combines fundamental information with a brief overview of recent advances in solid state electrochemistry, primarily targeting specialists working in this scientific field. Particular attention is focused on the most important developments performed during the last decade, methodological and theoretical aspects of solid state electrochemistry, as well as practical applications. The highly experienced editor has included chapters with critical reviews of theoretical approaches, experimental methods and modeling techniques, providing definitions and explaining relevant terminology as necessary. Several other chapters cover all the key groups of the ion-conducting solids important for practice, namely cationic, protonic, oxygen-anionic and mixed conductors, but also conducting polymer and hybrid materials. Finally, the whole is rounded off by brief surveys of advances in the fields of fuel cells, solid-state batteries, electrochemical sensors, and other applications of ion-conducting solids. Due to the very interdisciplinary nature of this topic, this is of great interest to material scientists, polymer chemists, physicists, and industrial scientists, too.

Solid-State Physics

Solid-State Physics PDF Author: James Patterson
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642025897
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 841

Book Description
While the standard solid state topics are covered, the basic ones often have more detailed derivations than is customary (with an empasis on crystalline solids). Several recent topics are introduced, as are some subjects normally included only in condensed matter physics. Lattice vibrations, electrons, interactions, and spin effects (mostly in magnetism) are discussed the most comprehensively. Many problems are included whose level is from "fill in the steps" to long and challenging, and the text is equipped with references and several comments about experiments with figures and tables.

Modern Solid State Fermentation

Modern Solid State Fermentation PDF Author: Hongzhang Chen
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9400760434
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 332

Book Description
“Modern Solid State Fermentation: Theory and Practice” covers state-of-the-art studies in the field of solid state fermentation (SSF). In terms of different characteristics of microbial metabolites, this book catalogs SSF into two main parts: anaerobic and aerobic SSF. Based on the principles of porous media and strategies of process control and scale-up, which are introduced in the book, it not only presents a well-founded explanation of essence of solid state fermentation, but also their influence on microbial physiology. In addition, due to the rapid development of this field in recent years, inert support solid state fermentation is also examined in detail. At last, the modern solid state fermentation technology platform is proposed, which will be used in solid biomass bioconversion. This book is intended for biochemists, biotechnologists and process engineers, as well as researchers interested in SSF. Dr. Hongzhang Chen is a Professor at Institute of Process Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China.

Solid State Physics

Solid State Physics PDF Author: John J. Quinn
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3540922318
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 534

Book Description
Intended for a two semester advanced undergraduate or graduate course in Solid State Physics, this treatment offers modern coverage of the theory and related experiments, including the group theoretical approach to band structures, Moessbauer recoil free fraction, semi-classical electron theory, magnetoconductivity, electron self-energy and Landau theory of Fermi liquid, and both quantum and fractional quantum Hall effects. Integrated throughout are developments from the newest semiconductor devices, e.g. space charge layers, quantum wells and superlattices. The first half includes all material usually covered in the introductory course, but in greater depth than most introductory textbooks. The second half includes most of the important developments in solid-state researches of the past half century, addressing e.g. optical and electronic properties such as collective bulk and surface modes and spectral function of a quasiparticle, which is a basic concept for understanding LEED intensities, X ray fine structure spectroscopy and photoemission. So both the fundamental principles and most recent advances in solid state physics are explained in a class-tested tutorial style, with end-of-chapter exercises for review and reinforcement of key concepts and calculations.
