Excerpt from Social History of England IN pre-historic times England was inhabited by various races in turn. All that is known of them and of their manner of life is gathered from the remains found near the caves in which they dwelt. The only implements of the earliest race were rudely-chipped stone knives. They were followed by a people somewhat like the Eskimos, who lived in underground dwellings, or in villages raised on piles by the shores of lakes. They knew how to polish their stone knives and weapons, and lived by hunting and fishing; some of them were cannibals. A people of a Finnish type came in amongst them, and taught them the use of bronze. These newcomers built their huts in circles, and buried their dead in round barrows. After them came immigrations of Celts, who named the land Britain, and of them history begins to tell us some.
