Kirchner and Nolde

Kirchner and Nolde PDF Author: Dorthe Aagesen
Publisher: Hirmer Verlag GmbH
ISBN: 9783777436883
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
The artists as explorers: the Expressionist artists Kirchner and Nolde studied non-Western lifestyles and incorporated them into their artistic projects. Between "armchair anthropology" practised in the museums and "field-work anthropology", which also took place in the colonies, both artists contributed to the construction of an (imagined) "other", offering an alternative to bourgeois, "civilised" society in Germany. Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Emil Nolde both spent time between 1910-11 studying objects and materials in ethnographic museums, but before long they expanded their investigations to include travels to colonial regions (Nolde) and the staging of "exotic" studio environments (Kirchner). The publication examines how both approaches evolved through an interplay between art, early German anthropology and colonial enterprise within the German Empire at the beginning of the 20th century. It contains not only paintings, drawings, sculptures, photographs, posters and documents, but also a variety of texts offering a broad overview as well as relating a specific narrative.

Open Heritage Data

Open Heritage Data PDF Author: Henriette Roued-Cunliffe
Publisher: Facet Publishing
ISBN: 178330359X
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 176

Book Description
Digital heritage can mean many things, from building a database on Egyptian textiles to interacting with family historians over Facebook. However, it is rare to see professionals with a heritage background working practically with the heritage datasets in their charge. Many institutions who have the resources to do so, leave this work to computer programmers, missing the opportunity to share their knowledge and passion for heritage through innovative technology. Open Heritage Data: An introduction to research, publishing and programming with open data in the heritage sector has been written for practitioners, researchers and students working in the GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums) sector who do not have a computer science background, but who want to work more confidently with heritage data. It combines current research in open data with the author’s extensive experience in coding and teaching coding to provide a step-by-step guide to working actively with the increasing amounts of data available. Coverage includes: • an introduction to open data as a next step in heritage mediation • an overview of the laws most relevant to open heritage data • an Open Heritage Data Model and examples of how institutions publish heritage data • an exploration of use and reuse of heritage data • tutorials on visualising and combining heritage datasets and on using heritage data for research. Featuring sample code, case examples from around the world and step-by-step technical tutorials, this book will be a valuable resource for anyone in the GLAM sector involved in, or who wants to be involved in creating, publishing, using and reusing open heritage data.

Japanomania in the Nordic Countries, 1875-1918

Japanomania in the Nordic Countries, 1875-1918 PDF Author: Gabriel P. Weisberg
Publisher:
ISBN: 9780300220117
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
This extensive publication, complete with hundreds of illustrations by such renowned artists as Carl Larsson, Edvard Munch, Vilhelm Hammershøi, Helene Schjerfbeck, Pekka Halonen, Akseli Gallen-Kallela, Gerhard Munthe, Pietro Krohn, and Frida Hansen, among others, offers an unprecedented study of Japanese influence on the visual arts in the Nordic countries. This unlikely diffusion of Japanese culture, known collectively as Japonisme, became increasingly apparent in England, France, and elsewhere in Europe during the 19th century, although nowhere was the influence seemingly as pervasive as it was throughout the Nordic countries. The book reveals how the widespread interest in Japanese aesthetics helped to establish notions of a fundamental unity between the arts and transformed the region's visual vocabulary. The adoption of Japanese motifs and styles in Finland, Norway, Sweden, and Denmark gave a necessary cohesion to their existing artistic language, creating a vital balance within and among all of the decorative arts. Distributed for Mercatorfonds Exhibition Schedule: Ateneum Art Museum, Finnish National Gallery, Helsinki (02/18/16-05/15/16) National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design, Oslo (06/16/16-10/16/16) Statens Museum for Kunst, Copenhagen (01/19/17-04/23/17)
